I just got a bright orange scoly. How rare?

You can translate "So much money" to "Tyree LE's wouldn't exist, b/c no one would be paying for them". Does that make it better for you?

He obviously makes enough money doing it.... otherwise he wouldn't be doing it lol.

Don't get me wrong I am a fan of a lot of Tyree's Corals. I was using him LE corals as an example to support my argument.

Your a fan of Tyrees corals? Many are. Does that make 'his' red and green favia pentagona worth more than the LFS' red and green favia pentagona? Same Species, same general ocean, same requirements, same chemistry required for life, same genetics (most likely(im theorizing here-Im no biologist))....
the only true difference is because he attached a funny name to it "war coral" ...

No difference in my book. But there are people in this thread and on these boards that turn there nose up to "non lineaged" corals... thats ridiculous...
Does it really make the coral any nicer in your tank?

heck, half of the Tyree corals probably werent even plucked from the ocean by him. They probably were picked and shipped with the rest, but he bought it first, and marketed it... ( i make no claims to know how it really works, thats just my theory-- I would love to know the real story though)

When I buy a Tyree War coral I know exactly what it will look like in my tank if I replicate the conditions.

The Tyree War coral is actually my favorite piece so you're barking right up my tree. I have favia pentagona green and red, and I have Tyree War.... take a guess which looks better. I got the "regular one" from Live Aquaria, I got the Tyree from... I think Fraggle Reef. Now if my LFS had the same exact thing as my war coral for 1/2 the price.... you're damn right I would buy it. But they aren't going to have it, chances are it's either close to it... or way off. Either of which would cause me to not purchase it.

Now at the same time don't take it as Tyree is the only thing I spend my money on. I said I'm a fan of his corals. If I like it, I will buy it. If you want that Tyree Sunset Monti... pay the man. If you want an orange monti w/ green polyps.... thats fine too.

Monster Cable sells HDMI cords for over $100, where the same cord sells online for $15. Would I buy that monster cable, nope.... but someone who is a satisfied customer and trusts the Monster Cable Company probably will.

You can complain and protest all you want, but nothing will change. Every hobby is the same unfortunately.

I dont consider this complaining. Protesting yes.
When it comes to price gouging, which is what is happening at the wholesalers and retailers, I get rowdy.. Im not trying to alienate anyone Tyree included...

However, I dont agree that just cause its from 'Tyree's namesake' it is going to be a prettier coral.

dont forget how coral crazes run.. 8mths -2 yrs and they get forgotten... remember the ricordea craze 4 yrs ago? that busted, Indo Acans..busted...Heck- red sea xenia even had a slight craze for a while in 05...Blasto Wellsi in 06.... the bottom will fall out in time.. it always does..

except on gasoline! :(

That is absolutely the best description of this hobby I have ever heard. Personally I am happy buying corals that are not "named" BUT if you want the "stuff" your going to pay for it, and in return, you CAN get paid back. This is a hobby like many others, someone puts their name on it, your gonna pay, deal with it or avoid it :)

Believe it or not some people buy stuff for the sheer "rarity" of it. If these people didn't exist Tyree wouldn't be making so much money. Not saying I'm this way, but a good percentage of coral keepers obviously are. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion, if you want the Ultra Quality pieces you pay for for it. If you get a deal, Good for you, lets hear about it.

I made a similar thread on the Zoanthid forum where I got what I though could be Nuclear Green Palys. I bought em b/c I liked them, not b/c what I thought they were. I paid $10 for a 30 poly colony. Turned out they weren't, but big deal I still have em.

People reselling stuff b/c people on a forum think it's not top notch is silly imo, I agree with you there. The comment about peoples' disposable income really has no bearing on the matter either. Just b/c said person may have more money than you or myself to burn on coral doesn't mean he's posting something to make a profit.

I do agree with you that people will pay what it's worth to them. But guess what, the prices are obviously right if Aussie Scolys are selling for $300 a piece for a 3" coral. The hobby is taking off and the wholesalers know it.

Also, like I said before... people buy coral for the sheer purpose of trading it also. I don't do it often, but if I see a deal on something I'll typically take advantage of it for the sheer purpose of hopefully trading it for something else down the road.

FYI my coral guys' Aussie wholesaler increased the price of Ultra Grade scolys 4x from 2 weeks ago when he placed the order. So prepare for those prices to go even higher.

Tyree doesn't make "so much money" I wish people would get that out of there head. The guy is in it more for the love of the animals then the money. As a matter of fact I bet his mark up is less then most LFS

why is everyone getting off the subject?? this thread was made by the author asking if a certain coral was rare??? imo its uncommon ... end of story

My bad:D

I would say that species of Scoly is the most common one you find in Orange but they are not ones you can find every time you visit a wholesaler. So I would say far from rare but not really too common..............if that makes sense

You quoted my entire post and commented on the very first sentence....

Which in fact was brought up already and I tried to clarify

I'm using him as an example to prove the fact that there is a rather LARGE market for "Elite" Coral. Not everyone is going to settle for a Green w/ Purple center Favia Pent.

Orange scoly

Orange scoly

I personally like the solid is a bit different compared a standard warpaint or bleeding Apple. I have a solid blue also. A true collector loves a solid IMO.

I'm sure over the 8 years since OP posted that question he has reconciled if he likes it or not......
