i might have two females

I have a small about an Inch true percula clown. he has been in the tank for about 3weeks at most, by himself. when i bought him he had a pair but it died. His pair was a little big than him. So yesterday i got a big about 2" true percula do you think that they are both girls or is the smaller one the boy. thanks for the help puffer21

puffer.. i dont know alot yet, still learning like you. in your original pair the one that stayed alive was the smaller right? that would make him a male. males can turn to females , but once female, cant go back to a male

if the fish you bought was 2 inches, that prob. way to big. and if it was alone in its tank when u bought it, it could very well be female as well.

its best to let your clown (that u had oringinaly) get as big as you can (at least 2 1/2) and then by the SMALLEST clown you can, a juvi thats hopefully in a tank with lots of others like it.

When you QT the new baby clown make sure you leave it in qt less than 2 weeks (unless there turns out to be a problem) or it could turn female...

I bought two maroon clowns about 1 1/2 months ago and they were almost the same size. the slightly smaller one got beat up over and over agian, i had to take him back. Ive been reading up on pairing since and it looks like im gonna have a heck of a time since i chose maroons lol

ok thanks. But i though since the small one was so small that it couldnt pic its sex yet. so i thought i was fine. should i return one.

Why do you think they are both females?

I had good results when I introduced the clowns in the quarantine tank, even though one was already in my display.

That's not necesarily true.

I had my small one for like 6 weeks before getting a larger one.

Give them a chance unless one is killing the other.

it takes time for a male to turn to a female (and that's after they are past juvenilles) if youget a bigger clown than ur small one and its only been two weeks i wouldnt be too worried. Just watch for signs of them hurting each other bad and mouth locking. But over time the bigger one will bully the smaller one until it submits to the female... Then u know for sure that is the female.

I've read it takes up to a year for a clown to mature sexually. Chances are if your clown is an inch it's still unsexed.

I've had a clown that I think is about a year and 1/2 old (have had for a year). I just recenly purchased a small oce. (1.5inch), they started out fine (about 2 months ago)... bigger one didn't bother the smaller one at all, but now during feeding times or when I go by the tank the larger shows signs of agression. I've seen him dragging the small oce around by it's tail or pushing it away. Never sparring though. I think it just takes some time before they're peaceful towards each other. Eventhrough the larger shows aggression on occasion they still sleep together in the corner or swim together around the tank.

Yes, it is possible for that quick of a transision from male to female, but it is also rather unlikely. The fastest observed change was in A. clarkii, which just happens to be the same species with the shortest hatch to breeding time of under 12 months. A. percula are the slowest to mature and spawn of any that I have had.
