Yup, bit of a sticker shock. But divers den did not disappoint. Arrived extremely healthy. Must have been shipped in 5 gallons of water.

I've never seen a new fish act so confident, it's the first day and you wouldn't know it, acts like he's been in the tank months.

Beautiful fish! Hope it doesn't get sick. Would be a shame to see that baby die to an unknown parasite that it came in with.

Do you keep corals? Is that your only butterfly? Not being able to keep most butterflies with corals and nems is the biggest bummer. I would love to have a raccoon and some other coral-slayers....

Sounds so ominous. Like something a Bond super-villain would say....

Yea don't jynx it bro! Or are u just jellycats that this guy buys $600 fish haha. I am haha.

Butterflies get diseases so easily... no one is being ominous. Happy for the owner, but, gotta say, yikes! Not QT'ing a $600 butterfly is ballsy, that's all.

I bought a pair and still lost one in QT due to disease. Now I just love my $900 single tinkeri :)

TOTALY JELLYCATZ! But, that's just me being nice and trying to not offend someone by being direct and saying what SDguy said...

I'm sure everything will be ok. DD does take good care of their fish and wouldn't knowingly send out a sick fish. I know they do get sick fish and if one of them is sick there is a chance they are all sick. I'd hate for you to experience some of the turmoil that I have with sick fish. Good luck I'd love to be as blessed as you to afford that BE...A...U...T...FUL FISH!

I trust LA DD. any fish that come from LA, quality marine, blue zoo, LFS etc I 100% QT.

But the extra cost for DD livestock is because the livestock has been held at WI facility for 6-8 weeks and would believe they would treat any illness in that time.

Thought of QTing a $600 fish scared the living crap out of me. I just felt more comfortable knowing that he was going into a fully stable mature tank. Had he come from somewhere other than DD or other sellers I trust, for starters then I simply wouldn't have bought this fish from anywhere else, and any other fish I would QT. I really didn't want this to be a debate about QT or not QT. I was excited to welcome this beautiful fish into my reef, and was just pleased that acclimation went well. Thought people on here would also appreciate the beauty of this fish.

I splurged!

We'll see how he does in next couple of days, got to say, really impressive condition, even ate dinner this afternoon.

On another note about QT,
I lost a convict tang last week in my QT, nothing was out of the ordinary with params, no signs of a parasite either, no one will ever know for sure. But I did wonder, had I put him into the DT, would I have still lost him? The part about QT I don't like is that it's an unfamiliar place, it's quite unnatural, and my fish always seem so stressed in the QT. It's also always a constant worry about water quality and params, I for one don't feel as comfortable about my QT as I do with my DT.

It wasn't a rash or irresponsible decision to not QT the tinker, ultimately I believed the best interests of the fish on this occasion, after evaluating the source of the fish, was to not QT.

Hey Brett, yes, I keep corals, mostly SPS, have a few LPS torch, frog hammer, 1 brain. Bunch of mushrooms, couple of clams, and a nem.

I fully expected the mushrooms to get annihilated. And expected to have to remove all the LPS. However so far, nothing has been touched by the other "with caution" fish such as a Regal Angel, Chaetodon Mitratus, and flame Angels. Now we'll see how the tinker does. I feed very, very heavy, (LRS, grocery store clams, all kinds of frozen - brine shrimp, bloodworm, mysis foods,) so maybe this contributes to them not picking at coral?

LADD only does 2 weeks of QT - by far not enough to be sure the fish is clean.
That would require a minimum of 6 weeks and prophylactic treatment against the usual suspects: ich, velvet, brook (if it's a clown or damsel), uronema (if it's a cromis) and of course a good de-worming and fluke treatment (mandatory for butterflies).
After that you only have to worry about the rarer internal bacterial, viral and fungal diseases (tuberculosis, vibrio, ichthyosporidium,...)

After a bad snafu I quarantine all fish for a minimum of 2 months. That doesn't mean that I put them into a naked, bare bottom tank. I make it as nice as possible but the QT allows me to treat the fish when I have to. It also keeps my established fish safe.
