Nope, fw dips do not kill ich. Long term hyposalinity will, as will copper. Most of the ich "meds" for treating in-tank are completely ineffective, and some are even harmful to other things in your tank.

The current batch of spots will drop off in a few days, but it's just a matter of time till the next batch hatches. If the fish has ich, it's reproducing in the tank as well. You have two options. Remove all fish, treat them in a separate QT, and leave the tank fishless for ~6 weeks while the ich dies out. Or, cross your fingers, and keep the tank as clean as possible to eliminate stress, feed the fish good food (garlic may or may not be beneficial, but it doesn't hurt to try), and hope for the best.

I venturing to say that 100% OF THEM DONT WORK.
U/V can stop the reproduction but if your fish has it it will have to fend for himself.
Theres ich in my tank but my fish have developed tolerance and my uv helps out.

Ciro...Welcome to the world of tangs.... My first mistake 1 1/2 years ago when I got into this hobby was not doing enough research on the needs of certain fish and how resiliant they were to parasite/ illnesses. Blue hippo tangs 9 out of 10 times from any LFS will have ich....

Every lfs I have gone to between broward and dade were all the same results especially with the hippos. scratching, white spots, etc etc. If you have a qt separate him into it hypo him or get him to better status and trade that sucker back into the lfs.. that my opinion though. Good luck if you plan to keep him and remember that your tank has ich now too so keep the rest of the fish as healthy as possible and water conditions good. If the fish are strong they can beat it on their own.. I have read alot recently that ich generally isn't the major factor in killing the fish but along with the aid of secondary infections it's simply to much for the fish to fight.

Again..good luck.. my experience cost me 400 dollars in livestock due to lack of knowledge

ive had the tang in my 15g for about 8 months and she went threw a lot of shiz. but i think im just going to do lots of water changes and hopefully he will fight it out. and another thing. how do yo know if you fish if not paird is male or female?

Hippo tangs are tricky!! I have had mine for over 5 years and somehow last year he broke out in spots. It went away without treatment. Fast forward to my 300 gallon upgrade. I moved the hippo and a yellow from my 125 to a 55 for hypo qt before they go into the 300 just in case. After a week, the yellow started having issues so I upped the the salinity and shortly after moved them to the 300. After all, they are old and "look" fine. Within 24 hours of being in the 300 the hippo broke out into spots? How is this possible? He has been crystal clear and healthy forever!! I ripped him back out of the 300 and threw him into a 29 for hypo. You may think the 29 is cruel, but my first thoughts were spear and onto the chopping block!!! How can this fish harbor this parasite without showing signs for soooo long. Perhaps there is something else that "looks" like ich. Moral of the story is not only qt, but be careful.

Good luck

I don't know if anyone mentioned it already, but I've had some success with garlic. I've actually minced it up and added to the tank and I've seen a garlic treatment at the LFS. Many fish will gobble up the minced pieces and this aids the success as a treatment for ich. Spectrum also makes foods that include garlic. The one I saw at the store was this one:

Garlic Treatment

Good luck!

This is a subject that haunted me i the begining and I have plainly come to realize reasons for breakout once it's introduced.

If Ich does in fact exist in the tank bottom line is it will not be killed without leaving the tank fishless for 4-6 weeks. 6 weeks tobe total peace of mind. Although I have also read where the parasites can sometimes be found to exist even up until 2 months(f-in crazy imo and it blows for beig fishless that long).

What to do with fish? Hypo or copper. Copper is sensitive to many tangs and while they may not suffer and die they could be internally damaged and you risk shortening their life span.

What type of environment? If the fish is not stressed by his buddies in the tank and water conditions are within their propper ranges it allows the fish the ease of one less battle to deal with.

Now this is now way direct facts but what I have gathered through numerous threads, posts and personal experience.

My personal opinion being since I have ick in my tank is keep he fishes healthy with good foods soaked in vitamins and garlic and they should be able to fend for themselves.

Good luck amigo and sorry for the long and blah post :o

lol. thx guys. im going to try the garlic theory. i did some of it today but the one that needs i the most didn't get any of it. the tang was hiding in the rocks because she knows hat every time i move the canopy i'm going to go in the tank.

Ciro...Try getting some vitachem as well and soak it along with garlic. It's still great to use along with your food... my fishes have eaten all their foods with this and maintained a healthy status til now.
