I thought i dodged it!

Guess i was wrong.

I started my 37 column and moved all of the rock in addition to about 10 mour pounds of live rock from my twenty high. I have about 45 pounds in there right now.

Anywayyyyyyyy i'm experiencing the algea bloom from hell right now. In my 20h, hair algea ruined my life. In this tank, the algea is suspended in the water turning it very lime green. Seriously, it's just a bit brighter than my skimmate. :p

I know this is a normal phase and all, but dang it I want it to go away. I've had a huge clump of chaeto in the display since day one.

I know there really isn't anything more i can do besides the obvious (less photoperiod, cut down on feeding) and i also know it will die in time. I just wanted to share my tragedy.

How much flow and skimming do you have? Also, are you using RO/DI water? Diatoms and green hair algae is normal, but it shouldn't be floating in the water column. Sounds like you might have a filtration issue.

I have roughly 1000 gph in 37 gallons. So that's a little bit over 27 turnovers per hour. It's more than sufficient, mainly because i plan to do NO sps, and in the cube the water is bounced all around easily.

I'm running a Coralife Super Skimmer 65. (Good for 65 Gallons)

I use Reverse Osmosis water.

It's not like i see the algea physically floating, but the water is a lime green tint. I have read here that it happens just when the algea doesn't adhere to the rock... Maybe i was wrong.

Thanks for your input! :)

Ps, I have always wondered what that is in your avatar!

some water changs may help, but for sure a uv filter will take care of it in a day or 2, some people like them some dont, i use the turbo twist on mine

I would start running some carbon and phosphate media. Black Diamond works well for carbon and phosban, rowaphos, or phosar are good phosphate medias.

Remember, your tank is new. Diatoms and green hair algae are a part of the normal cycling process. I would let the tank do it's thing and it should go away. The carbon and phosphate media will help clarify the water. ;)

I've been running carbon for about 3 days. I'll pick up some phosban this weekend.

WHAT IS IN YOUR PICTUREEEEEEEE? lol

Without a doubt a UV sterilizer will do the trick...and FAST!

Had the same problem on a new 65g EcoSystem about 10 days after setting up the tank. Added a UV sterilizer and within 1 day the water was clear. In 2 days...crystal clear!

I also use Boyd's Chemi-Pure Elite as an added filter medium since I don't use a skimmer and a PhosBan 150 reactor.
