I have had a maroon clown (2-2.5 inches) for two years and was thinking of getting her a mate. Do you think that this is even possible to put a small clown in and have it live? this is an established reef tank so i dont want too much agression. can anyone lead me in the right direction.

Also how much work is it to get them drunk and in the mood?

thanks

IME the best thing to do would be to put a much smaller clown in with her. (1-1.5" probably) Also, you will know they are "taking" to eachother when the smaller of the two has little siezures next to the larger female. This is their courtship dance. Clowns spawn naturally according to lunar cycles along with slight temprature changes. If you don't already have a moonlight you should look into getting one. I'm sure there are some threads going into more detail about the exact timing of lunar cycles and what the exact tempratue changes should be. Hope this helps a little.

What other fish do you have in there? These two are going to be very protective of their nest area.

yeah my tank might be to small at 75 gallons. I have a marine beta, black capped basslet, mandrin, solar wrasse, cryptic six line wrasse, tomini tang and a fire fish. oh and the maroon clown.

hmmm it might not be worth it just something i was thinking about. I do have lunar lights and all that.

Well anyone else or can you help me more with this info?

i think its possible justhave to do the patented seperation method of pairing maroons they are a lil harder to pair but it seems to work using a specimin container to hold the new clown in in the tank to let them get used to eacother without your female getting at him

marons are really aggresive i tried to mate mine but he ended up killing his partner to be because she was very territorial

Um....he? Killed her? Is that even possible?

Sounds to me like you ended up with two females, or at the very least mistakenly identified the genders. The female is always larger, and from everything I've read always the one to be aggressive. The male is smaller and subordinate to the female, so it seems unlikely that your male killed his mate.
