I want to hit something. Suprising GTA PH death.

A week ago I got my second anemone, a GBTA. Good size, 6-8 inches across. Had moved first night and settled for a week. Got rid of a big rock and had to re-arrange, ended up in much the same place. Started walking that night and I went to bed waiting to see where he ended in the morning. I knew of powerhead danger but I figured that: My koralia 1050's seemed like they had a decent cage and were not high powered relative to my tank size, don't even suck up a table shrimp if I drop it. Also up near the top of the water. With so much rock work I didnt foresee good sized anemone exactly go drifting. All the stories I've seen on here are usually much stronger flow tanks/equipment.

But yet he managed to make it up there. Not only did he make it up there, but took me a while to figure out where it went because it was so finely shredded into sub zoa head sized pieces. Fortunately so far tank hasn't suffered, things looked a bit angry but recovered since I had to leave for work. Did a water change and suctioned out the few peices I could find. Think a lot ended in skimmer. No carbon on hand and stores closed : \.

So point of post? Little bit venting, little bit cautionary tale to anyone else that figured in their lower flow tank they were safe.... you may not be.
(Also interested if anyone has a good suggestion where to get the right kind of foam or cloth or whatever to wrap power heads in if I were to ever get a second anemone. (First is planted solidly and refuses to move even when moving it's rock around.)

I have had this nightmare many times. Not in reality but I worry about this with my GBTA. In months he hasn't moved- hosted by a crazy tomato clown. I would like to think the clown would kick his butt if he did.

:( Sorry to hear about that. I was so worried about that happening when I was planning my BTA tank that I left the powerheads out altogether. I rely on loc-line to direct water movement (and want to get a stronger pump to help).

FOAM FOAM FOAM...

IDK where .. I have MP40's and I have about 10 spare foam covers for them.

Normally the 1050 is not sucking that hard, but if you have a big anemone that cover more area of the powerhead housing that will increase the suction power. You need cover all power heads and water intake.
I would recommanded taking any powerhead out, once you put the power head back in, that change the flow and that might cause the anemone to run again.

I used old pantyhose with a rubber band to cover my powerheads. They did cut down on the flow and I have to rinse them out a lot but it's better than the alternative.
