Yesterday, at the phil long expo center they held the science fair. there were about 300 projects, and I got first place in the senior biology division for a project where I fragged mushrooms, and subjected them to different levels of vitamin c. :D

Yeah I'd love to hear details, I'm glad to see this win over the bubbling lava display's ;)
So you physically cut the shrooms then?

I'll post my complete findings later, but I found that vitamin c made a big impact on the frags in a good way. Oh, BTW I am going to state!!:D If you look on the third page of the metro section of the Gazzette, there is a tiny part about me. Its mainly on my brother that won the grand prize, and is going to the international science fair!! Next time you frag something could you guys add the recomended dose of kent marine C to the water, this will sound good at state if you can do this, and also it will help your coral.

Good Job. Did you actually cut the shroom?
Yeah, if you go to garf.org and look up trevors mushroom propagation you can see how i did it. Here is the abstract for my project.

The coral reefs are being destroyed, partially due to over collection. Fragment propagation of coral is a possible solution to this problem. Fragmenting wounds coral, necessitating its move to a quarantine aquarium. Quarantine is stressful to coral, often resulting in its sickness or death. There is need to expedite healing, and transfer fragments back to the main aquarium.

This project was designed to determine whether fragmented corallimorphs, genus Actinodiscus, would display faster healing with Ascorbic Acid supplementation. Six coralimorphs were fragmented. Four random fragments were placed in three substrate-filled Petri dishes, then placed in three aquariums. Two aquariums were respectively supplemented with 0.3mL and 0.6mL Ascorbic Acid. Control aquarium was left un-supplemented. Water was monitored for Nitrates, pH, KH, Specific Gravity, and Temperature. Healing was determined by measuring with a caliper, corallimorph oral disc diameter, every other day, over a 20-day period.

On day 10, the un-supplemented corallimorphs started to shrink, dying by day 14. The Ascorbic Acid supplemented corallimorphs continued thriving and their oral discs grew. Corallimorphs supplemented with 0.3mL Ascorbic Acid grew an average of 2.4mm, and 1.9mm respectively. Healthy corallimorphs were moved back to the main aquarium at 3 weeks.

Findings suggest that tissue regeneration in coral fragmenting occurs more readily with Ascorbic Acid supplementation. Addition of Ascorbic Acid to fragmented coral could make fragmenting a more successful option for aquarists and scientists, negating necessity to over collect from coral reefs.

Very nice. I'd like to see results with other type corals as well.
I am going to try to do this, and the board of the science fair has urged me to also, but I don't have any other soft corals to frag. I've got some zoo's and possiblly paly's, but my mom dosn't want me to frag them because of the possible palytoxins. Does anyone here have any xenia, or toadstool mushroom corals to spare? I can pay in mushroom frags scroll coral frags or one lobed brain frag. Here are pics of the parent corals

holy crap nice photos, I need you to come over and take some pictures of my tank!!
Thanks :o, can I see a pic of your tang you just picked up from exotic tropicals, scott was telling me about it. Today I went down to exotic tropicals to trade my mushroom frags for some coral to use for phase 2 of my experiment. Well I got their with the shrooms and talked with him a little bit about soft corals he had. when I had finally picked out some coral for my experiment, pink xenia, silver xenia, toadstool mushroom, and sinularia I asked him what it would cost, he said to my suprise FREE:eek1: !!!!!! Because it was for a science experiment. woohoo:D I'm aclimating it now, and the xenias have allready started to pulse.

Yeah, Scott's a great guy.
Nice work on your project so far, I hope it goes well in state!

That coral in your top picture is awesome! You trading frags of that? I've got lots of zoos. :D
