Here we go again...

I am smiling ear to ear. Christmas just came early! An 84x30x30, Starphire tank and steel stand built by Crystal Dynamics just showed up in my garage and my is she SEXY! The bad news is, I am swamped this week, so this is where she'll sit for a few days. The good news is, I only have 5 more days of work til next year... so she's gonna be wet soon! This might be the longest 5 days of my life, next Friday can't come soon enough.

Looking nice.

So how do I get on this list where things just show up? I mean they can check it twice to find out if I am naughty or nice.

What other equipment do you have already or are going to use?? If it is going to get wet, that water has to get light up and go somewhere. Or is that what is going to show up next?

Thank guys! Packages coming this week with plumbing bits and pieces. I have pretty much everything else I need for now, I think, from my 220 that was up a few years ago. Equipment list for now is as follows

Control: Apex Classic & some DJ strips
Lighting: 72" Giesemann Infiniti
Skimmer: Reef Dynamics INS-350
Flow: 2x Seaswirls, 2x Gyres and 4x Tunze 6105s
Sump: DIY 80 gallon
RO: Spectrapure Maxcap 90
100 lbs of live rock
200 lbs of dry Pukani, Macro and Tonga branch mix
90 lbs ea. of Reef flakes and Mini flakes

At some point Ill need to get a calcium reactor, for now will be using the BRS 1.1 dosers from my 90gal.

I DIY'd a chaeto reactor similar to the ARID out of an old PO4 reactor for my current 90, I have had great success with it and am thinking Ill build a larger one out of an old Bashsea reactor I have that is 8 x 12, though that may not be big enough and may need to find something larger down the road.

So lets play catch up…

So lets play catch up"¦

Heres what the room looked like when we bought the house back in April"¦

First I did some painting

Then my father in law and I ripped out the carpet and put in tile flooring

Then I decided to put some tile on the wall around where the tank will go"¦

Here is my sump, last weekend I was able to make the changes I wanted to since last time it was in operation. The tank itself is an old Leemar 80 gallon (48x18x16) I put 3 baffles in place when it was used previously but wanted to add a filter sock holder. A little acrylic and some weld on 16, Thank You Amazon and I was set. The other thing I wanted to do was to paint the back bottom and one side white so that I can see into the sump more easily.

And this is what we have tonight, after spending way too much time in the attic. I could not have picked a worse place in the house to try and hang this light. It is the 220v German version with the Halide ballasts built in, so the fixture weighs almost 80lbs. I hit a joist on one side but was right between 2 on the other end (insert many colorful profanities here). I had to brace between 2 joists, located smack in the center of 2 HVAC returns and an intake. Never again"¦

Other goings on…

Other goings on"¦

I picked up 100 or 150 lbs of live rock from another reefer moving back in July or August, its been hanging out waiting patiently.

Here is the Giesemann after rewiring to remove the step up transformer and testing it on a 220v circuit.

And heres the algae reactor I built that is on the current 90 gallon tank, used to be a Bashsea media reactor. Ignore the wire nuts, everything has been soldered and heat shrunked(is that a word?)

Current 90 gallon. Sticks happily awaiting their new home...

Mwahahahahahahahah!

Looking good. Lots of work on that. Looks like you are getting there nicely.

The correct work would be shrank. HAHAHA

Subscribed!

Ian, if you want a tiny piece of that large colony I have one that I had to cut off when I first got it due to is receding pre arrival.

In the tense used the word would be heat "shrunk."

Dave.M

Shrink, shrank, shrunk... LOL! Thanks for setting me straight guys.

Really like this build. Congrats and enjoy that monster tank! I'll be following along.

Thanks! Glad to have you following along.

Ian, if you want a tiny piece of that large colony I have one that I had to cut off when I first got it due to is receding pre arrival.*

Thanks Ryan! I'd love a piece, let me know next time you are headed down this way. I have a couple pieces I wouldn't mind passing along to you as backups also.

Im off tomorrow and the plan is to finish the wall between the tiles. That involves;

1. Run conduit through wall from stand area to canopy area for Apex cables and any other control cables I may need.

2. Run return line through wall from stand area to canopy area because I had the tank drilled for 3 bulkheads, as I was planning to run a Herbie overflow initially and would use the 3rd hole as the return. I have since changed my mind and will be running a Bean. Will go through the wall because Im already running conduit for the Apex and it will let me keep the tank and stand as close to the wall as possible to eliminate as much space as possible for any small hands and/or small kitties to potentially get though.

3. Move an electrical outlet as Im a little too close to the stand uprights on one for it to be usable.

4. Test Cat5 and make sure the existing cables are ok. If not Ill have to pull more.

After the above tasks are complete, I'll attach 3/4" ply to the wall and then cover it with FRP.

I have a BRS order with bulkheads and some other plumbing items, that should arrive today. I also have a large order of misc. fittings from US Plastic that I just found out is on backorder... Nerts!

Question on running the return line through the wall, would you guys trust Flex PVC alone in the wall? Or would you run it through something else?

Ian

I am actually am heading down tomorrow afternoon. I coach NAU hockey and youth U18 on the side. We have a game down at gila river arena in westgate tomorrow. If you want I can bring a piece if you want to meet up. Idk where you are in phx but I will be in Glendale tomorrow.

I would definitely run hard pic throught the wall. Never ever have a worry in your mind!

Oh look...

Oh look...

Great job on the tile so far! Looking forward to the tank's progression.

Thanks McPuff!

Well, opened the wall to do my thang for the return line and conduit and found electrical, sewer and bathroom plumbing. Thats about right since I have 8 guys coming to help move the tank in tomorrow. Back to Home Depot I go, good thing its 3 blocks from my house... Putting a slightly positive spin on things, the existing Cat5 works so at least Im not pulling more of that today too.

Who says I dont like to live dangerously! :hammer:

Good opportunity to plumb a manifold line into that sewer line.... I did and it was the best decision I ever made. Turn a valve and perfect water change execution with no mess.

It's in da house!

It's in da house!

Yesterday I spent all day moving electrical, installing return plumbing and finishing the wall before this morning's move. My plan was to run 3" PVC and run 1.5" spa flex through it so that in the event of a leak in the return I could contain any water and dump it back out into the room/sump. However, there was a sewer vent line running through my wall ~60" from the floor. I got a little creative and ended up having just enough space to run the 1.5" spa flex through the wall and used a couple access panels I found at Home Depot so I have access into the wall.

I ran the spa flex and fabricated a small acrylic tray out of scraps, leftover from the sump filter sock holder, that is attached to the stud directly under the pipe. Since I won't be able to see into the wall regularly will add an Apex ALD to my system and put one of the probes in this tray. That way I am alerted to any possible issues with the return plumbing before anything gets bad.

The access panels have been sealed into place with silicone and the doors for the access panel have were routed by 1/16" on each edge so that I can put an 1/8" gasket around them to seal them to ensure they are water tight. That should keep any moisture from the tank out of the wall.

I have Uniseals coming in my BRS order to go around the orange return pipes coming out of the wall, this should dampen any vibrations as well as ensure a good seal around them.

The last 2 steps were painting. First I painted the wall behind the tank white with Killz paint. I let that dry over night and then got up early this morning and went over it with Remarkable paint. For those of you that aren't familiar, Remarkable paint is a 2 part epoxy that's purpose is to turn any wall into a white board. I have used this stuff at my office all over walls in various locations. Once cured it is hard as a rock and am hoping it will protect the drywall from any overflows, splashes or salt creep. I used this because when we took my old 220 down there were some issues with the drywall directly behind the tank around the overflow. This will prevent any mildew from growing and any salt creep that may accumulate due to splashing from the overflow can just be wiped off. I am hoping that I don't ever need to wipe it down though as the overflow on this tank has a cover already and I just never go around to building one for the 220.

Everyone showed up bright and early, right at Noon and it took us all of 20 minutes to get the tank and stand in. Here's the 14 month old reason its taken so long to finish the room, enjoying the new tank.

And here's what we have with the doors on the stand.

I need to adjust the bottom hinges on all the doors, as the bottoms stick out just a little bit and still to come is the canopy. I wanted a 30" tall canopy from Crystal Dynamics but they advised that a canopy that big would be an awful lot of weight on top of the tank. So instead of getting a full canopy I had them build me the face frames and doors. I will frame out a canopy anchored to the wall and then attach the face frames to it using French Cleats, so that I can open the doors or quickly remove all the canopy panels if needed.

Thanks again to Tony, Carl, Brett, Stephen and Dad for help with the move this morning! And another huge Thank You to Trent and the team at Crystal Dynamics, the tank is amazing! I had high expectations and this is turning out way better than I imagined.

That's all I have in me for today, time to go lay on the couch.

Oh yea, my backordered plumbing parts should be here on Tuesday!
