Ice Fire Echinata

Well before you guys jump on my case like you already did you might want to read the op question.

I was responding to care of the ice fire, and how the care is similar to the other "enchinatas" available. Granted the word care is missing from my post so I can easily see you you thought I meant that the two corals are the same.

Your points on coral DNA are valid.

I have the aussi blue version and and waiting on my new tank to get going before I collect any more sps.

Here is mine. Got a small frag from caddisfly a year ago. Has grown into a nice colony. Have fragged it a bunch of times without a problem. Have it up high under my vho's in high flow

I agree. My Ice Fire is the same coloration as SDguy's and prefers lower light. My Aussie Echinata, however, loves the higher light/flow and has no green in it at all.

Same here!
Aussie echinata has white base w/ deep blue tips.
Icefire has green base with blue tips.

I think it is more based on location of origin as opposed to DNA between the two. Im guessing the Ice Fire is from Indo and the other one we...well...I think that one we know for sure :)

Prior to these aussie ones coming in, you couldn't find a frag bigger than 3/4" MAX of the Icefire. Now, suddenly people are getting large, multi-branch frags?

I agree. I remember there was like 4 people in the US to get the Ice fire from and even then you were spending $120 plus shipping for a 3/4" frag because it grew very very slow. I have had my Ice Fire for about a year and have only had maybe a 1/2" growth with a ton of encrusting.

Well here in Toronto it seems when a coral similar to a named coral comes in they just go a head and call it that. They have sold wild Aussie Echinata as IceFire Echinata. Im sure there are other stores doing the same thing.

By the way where did the orginal icefire come from?

You are probably talking about ReefRaft then (local Toronto LFS). Seems common practice to name it and raise the price. Where does the true IceFire Echinata come from?

I am attaching a pic of what they are calling an Ice Fire Echinata

True was from James Lee of Aquascene in CA. An Indo import I believe. If you don't know or can't prove lineage, name it whatever you want to. Don't give it the same name. We should try to preserve the integrity of the coral, and the collector as well.

Thanks for posting this pic, that is definitely not a Tyree Ice Fire Echinata, and is definitely a Aussie Echinata (structurally grows more branchy)

Ice fire, my favorite acro. I love the color and growth pattern. Ill admit I'm a little spoiled when it comes to getting corals, but I did make a large investment in chalices to get where I am.
Mathu- ill get a pic up tonight around 8 pac time.

Thats what I figured..

I am sure its common practice at many stores as names sell corals as people think its rare. Don't get me wrong their piece is absolutely stunning but definitely mislabeled. (intentionally)

I keep mines about 12 inches from my Pheonix 14K 150w metal halides. You can see mines in the video below of my 3 month old 90g reef :)
