ICE MELT question

Ok Just went to order my regular 4 gal bucket of ESV and notice there is a price increase!!!

I have like 2 bags of ice melt from the winter and ingredients says
Sodium Chloride.........007647-14-5
Calcium Chloride.........010043-52-4
Magnesium Chloride.....007786-30-3

is this safe to use for my calcium???

also can I just use soda ash for my alkanity?

Look up randys diy recipe. I use the 1st recipe for regularly low ph and it works great and its cheap.

I use cooked baking soda for alk
epsom salt for mag
and prestone driveway heat for cal

no, prestone driveway heat is the ice melting calcium source. it is also called peladow. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-02/rhf/#4

I checked peladow ingredients it's the same just no magnesium chloride

Dow Flake and Prestone (made by Dow) were tested for purity carefully. Other brands might have problems. That said, lots of people are successful with a wide variety of calcium chloride products.

Try a local mill and ask what calcium chloride they carry. Its usually in the back and 50# runs $20.
