ICF's Millepora Project Take 2: SPS in my Living Room

Many of you may remember I started a project tank for my kitchen. I started with a 40 Breeder, but when I found a 57G Oceanic Illuminata I decided to use this tank instead. Unfortunately, the extra weight looked like it was proving too much for the cabinets, so I drained the tank.

Many folks here expressed reservations about the spot I found for the tank. To be honest I questioned the aesthetics of the decision.

One major goal with this tank was always this: to plumb it into my existing system in order to share the same equipment and stability with my 18 month old, 8 foot reef.

I decided to build a stand and set up the tank as an expansion tank for the DT, and I set up the Illuminata for a few months in a hallway in our finished basement, and I plumbed the tank directly into the house sump. Unfortunately, I quickly became tired of the spot, and I felt such a beautiful tank was wasted as a Kenya Tree and Anthelia repository.

Another goal was to set this tank perpendicular to a wall so that it could be viewed from 3 sides. Unfortunately, I could not find a location to serve my purpose. After setting the tank up for a third time on the opposite side of the basement, and working out a separate sump, not only would it have been nearly impossible to plumb the tank into the main system, but I genuinely didn't like the tank hidden away in it's new corner.

Well folks, enough of the background, and I promise I'm not too crazy. I felt it was necessary to catch folks up who had tagged along on the old thread. :o

So now for the 4th and final move for this tank. After careful thought, consulting my wife, the kids, and a fellow reefer, I've decided to once again pursue my Specie Millepora tank in my living room.

More to come...

tang0v - I'm looking forward to it!

NaClCrocodile - Ok enough teasing, here's the spot and the cheesiest dramatic music I could find. The angle is walking into the house:

Here's a quick video I took last night of my show tank:

<object width="580" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9gF0JGUUm1c&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9gF0JGUUm1c&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="360"></embed></object>

Before I left for work today, I had some time to start reworking/refinishing the stand. Here you can see the base I added. Altogether I'll be adding 7-8" of height after the top is on:

<object width="580" height="360"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cUWa7VJ3r7A&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cUWa7VJ3r7A&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0x006699&color2=0x54abd6&border=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="580" height="360"></embed></object>

Here's the birch panels installed. The left side won't be visible, so I'm leaving a half panel. That way I can easily mount the ballast. I'll be adding another panel piece to the top and a 3/4" Birch top piece. I also have some trim I might add. The stand will be stained in a very rich Bombay Mahogany to match the stand of my show fuge- you can see my cube fuge in the background:

I had some time tonight to work on the stand. I did encounter one issue after installing the top. Unfortunately, the 1/2" plywood I added underneath still didn't give enough height to match the side panels. I took the entire top apart and leveled underneath the 1/2" plywood with 1/8" particle board. This completely fixed the issue. I added the 3/4" birch top and some trim. Save for the wood filler, here's the stand ready for stain:

Ah man, you need another 8 footer, but this time SPS

I need your paycheck then. :p

I've been a fan for quite some time of the smaller, rimless SPS tanks I've seen here on RC. I can't imagine having something as large as cato's teaming with SPS, and while his tank is certainly stunning, the demands of such a system, coupled with the expenses associated with it, would most likely be overwhelming for me.

My first reef was a sumpless and skimmerless 40 Breeder in my condo. After I broke that tank down I set up the cube tank, the one that now serves as my show refugium, as a small BB SPS tank with the 40 Breeder as sump and a Euro Reef skimmer. Unfortunately, that tank didn't do so well, yet my interest in a very minimalist, and even biotopic tank, never left.

When my wife and I bought our house, I was afforded the opportunity to be a bit more creative and expansive with reefing.

So this rimless Illuminata has ended up in too many odd corners in our home and really needs to be showcased. Before I went to bed this morning, I was able to sand the stand and add a second coat of polystain. Last night, while I waited for the 1st coat to dry, I was able to start work on the plumbing. I'm quite pleased because I finished both the return and drain pluming; and I was even able to get a first coat of Valspar plastic paint on it.

I'm going to get a third coat on the stand this morning and see if I'll need a 4th. I'm trying to color match to the fuge stand as closely as possible.
 Rolling right along....

Here's the finished stand:

...and finally...

Thank you DML08. I'm getting more and more excited about this build.

I finished spray painting the plumbing tonight. Here's what the plumbing will look like:

The overflow was purchased from my friendly, neighborhood Gobie. :D

*ICF supports club equipment recycling.

Thanks guys! I started filling it last night, but I only got halfway before I needed to make more water. The bulb is an XM 20k. Some of the videos have more white balance adjust so everything doesn't look washed out cool blue. :)
