Ich and how to get rid of it using HypoSalinity.

Don't use hypo on wrasses, especially leopards and any sand burrowing ones...this ones will die suddenly, the rest will usually make it, but most will get lethargic and then die...

Not sure this is accurate. I'm on week 5 of hypo, with my Tusk and Coris wrasse doing just fine. Both are eating well and still look fat. The 1st 2 weeks were tough as I was dropping the salinity and both were heavily infected, thought I'd lose both, but looks like we're in the home stretch now.

One final questions before I go... I was lucky enough to get hold of some beautiful picasso clowns a couple of weeks ago. They are still in the LFT at the minute. Was going to bring them home once my hyposalinity was complete. My question is should I run them through a hyposalinity cycle too even though they don't show signs of ich?

I wouldn't want to re-introduce ich when quarantining my new picasso clowns in regular salinity.

To me hypo is an easier and as effective method as copper. I rather do hypo than copper any day but both have their pros and cons,
Anyways, i would not trust fish at LFS. i rather bring them home and put them in observation for 8 weeks then move them over to main if they dont show any signs, you can do hypo on them too just to be on the sure side.

Would you recommend Hypo for newly purchased fish with no signs of Ich? I normally QT but havent tried Hypo. Also, is 1.009 a magic number where ich dies (and not 1.010) or does any significant decrease in salinity improve fishes ability to fight off the parasite?

I always treat tangs with either hypo or copper as they are ich magnets.
rest of the fish i just observe and then treat if needed.
1.009 is the magic number that needs to be maintained. it basically brackish water just on the edge of freshwater and saltwater. ATO is a very good investment for hypo tanks as this number of 1.009 has to maintained.
i am sure with the variation of reading error of the instrument (refractometer) there can be a chance of not being able to precisely attain 1.009 but try to keep it as close as you can.
At this low salinity ich cannot survive.

So....

I lost all my fish to ich or velvet a couple months back. The DT has been fallow since the loss. Last week I purchased a couple of clowns and have them in QT. They have been going through the hypo process for about a week and are doing great.

My question is since neither fish is showing signs of anything, eating well and seem happy, should I keep them in hypo for 2 weeks or go for a longer period?

I plan on keeping them in the qt until the DT fallow period is over but is there any benefit to keeping them in Hypo longer than necessary?

Thanks!

Yes I would keep them in hypo for min 4 weeks to 6 specially u are keeping them in qt anyways. 4 for sure and 6 if u like and then observe while DT is ready.

I use only tank transfer method. It doesn't stress out my clowns as long as all the parameters are exact and hypo damn near killed them from the stress of it. I support anything that works for you though. It just doesn't work for me. I'd rather spend extra money on salt and do the most effective treatment with the lowest stress than lose all the fish plus cost of medicine etc. I'll lug lots of water. No biggy. This info is great though so thanks a bunch.

Tank transfer is easy, effective and only takes 12 days. Eliminates any possibility of running into one of the strains of cryptocaryon irritans that is hyposaline resistant or has theronts which take 72 days to emerge.

Does anyone else have any info on .017 salinity? I have read this a number of places, just wondering what others experiences are, and if it's safe to do w/ corals and inverts?

Is it possible for fish to have flukes during hypo and if so can I that with Prazipro or should I wait until the hypo is finished and the salinity back to normal?

Hello Mike,

Hope you are still monitoring this thread. I was wanting to know what my PH & Alkalinity should read while in hyposalinity. I went a little over board with the DT. Gutted it. Ordered new rock from Aquarium Artists and put all the old rocks in a large Rubbermaid can to continue fallow measures. Took apart the sump and bought all new hoses. I want my fish back in their home. I quarantined my pyramid for 8 weeks. Never saw any signs. But he is mostly white and yellow. Took several months in the DT before I saw spots on his darker face! Grumbles.

Note to self, treat all light colored fish as if they have parasites!

Shelley
