Ich-Attack

I am using this product by Kordon for the first time to treat my 110 gallon reef. My tangs are coming down with ich. Especially the powder brown. Anyone else use this product? I just dosed the tank for the first time just a few minutes ago.

Few people here would recommend that product or any other. Check into the threads about about ich and the two methods most widely recommended. Hyposalinity in A QT or Copper in a QT

Don't wait too long. Ich can kill quick.

QT is not an option really. My QT would need to be atleast 100 gal. And I really don't want to tear down my aquascape to catch fish. Looking at the powder brown this morning, his spots have gone away some with two doses of Ich-Attack. I will ride it out for now...

thanks!!!

Do you know that the parasite have to drop off to reproduce? So, the spots will disappear only to potentially reappear later with or without medication.

I agree with Steven. They will come back. Worse

I have never had ich just go away. QT or Treat the tank, which would cost you your live rock bacteria and life. But doing nothing you are risking your fish.

Hope you find a solution

You won't need a 100 gallon tank to QT your fish. You could go to Lowes or Home Depot and pickup a 35-50 gallon "trash can" and use that for $25 or so. The square cans are much easy to use since you can hang filters on them etc... Any simple clamp/hang on light will due and you don't even need much since it's only a QT.

Once done QT you can use the can for water mixes or stash in the garage, patio, whatever until you need a QT tank again.

A QT "tank" doesn't really need to be a "tank" at all.

The point is however, that you do need to pull the fish out of the display to treat them or you'll never get rid of the parasites.

I read every article about ick I could get my hands on. Only one article (ATJ's Marine Aquarium Site "Marine Ich" suggested there is a possibilty fish can acquire an immunity to ich. The aquired immunity developed only after more than one exposure. If left in your display tank..yeah a fish or two might survive the first exposure, but in my humble opinion chances of their surviving a 2nd, 3rd, 4th exposure is pretty low.
Damage to the fish is already done when you can see on the fish the white, saltlike ich...these are well fed adults (mature) ready to leave their host (your fish) for their reproductive stage. If you do nothing, the fish that survive this outbreak will be subjected to a 2nd exposure...a 3rd exposure...etc.
Don't be a dummy like me. Get your fish into a qt tank...leave your display tank empty of fish for 4-6 wks. I don't know how much damge your pocketbook can stand, but after the loss of $200 (not including shipping) worth of fish & the little blenny being hit with ich a 2nd time, I finally got wize. The blenny is in a qt tank and my display is now fallow.
Denial is a terrible thing...loss of fish wise and pocketbook wise.
I'm just a lowly reef-keeper so please do not be offended when I say don't be stupid....take the advice offered to you by people with more knowledge of and experience with ich than me or you....I have experienced what you are now experiencing..I have walked in your shoes. If you are not willing to have a qt, then do your fish a favor & give your fish to someone who will put the fish into a qt and let your display tank be fishless for 4-6wks.
I agree that the qt is a remedy for ich, but it does have it's
limitation and I totally disagree with leaving a fish in qt after the mature forms of ich have left the fish. I think throwing the baby (babies to be) out with the bath (salt) water is very important at this point. I do think a 2nd qt is necessary to prevent reinfection. I do not think copper, hyposalinity, garlic, etc are useful ich treatments...too many things can go wrong...I wouldn't waste my time or my money. just my 2 cents....dr

ich

have ongoing problem in my 360 g tank,i have 12 different tangs lost only 2 tangs due to ich, also some of my tangs never get it but problem is going in waves ,i even bought 125 g tank just to use it as qt,i also run 36 w uv feed plenty with garlic extract ,but I still procrusinate to set up qt,cause it doesn bother fish that much, how long do you treat fish with caper any way?does any body have real secsess w/o ich coming back after all this problems of braking tank ,setting qt?

At very least, get a UV unit for your water. This may help reduce the incidence of reinfestation. Your tangs will eat Formula One Sinking Pellets with Garlic, so will most fish, and this might also help. I would strongly advise against medicating your display tank. Some get out ok; some don't.

Well I am not adverse to the QT idea. I have a 55 gallon ready and willing to take the fish. If the damn thing will cycle!!! I put my powder brown in my no rock on sand substrate 55 earlier tonight and now he is dead after lying agianst the HOB filter intake. The nitrites in the tank and now the Nitrates are through the roof and have been for the last 3 weeks. What do you all do in order to setup a QT tank with cycled water?

I will tell you this though....I have two fire shirp. my large yellow tang is always using them for cleanings. My brown powder tang that is now sleeping with the fishes in the sewer never did like them much. As I write this and for the last several hours my two cleaner shrimp have been working overtime on my big yellow tank. They clean awhile. ride around the tank on his back until he throws them off and then get back on him and clean some more. However they will only do this when the MHs ore off and the LEDs are on.
