ICH, Cupramine, Salinity & Temp?

hey YachtDr How is your copper dosing coming? I have had those fish in copper at 0.25 for two weeks then upped it to 0.4 or 0.5 for the past two weeks and still have not seen any improvement!! Just curious if we got the same "immune disease" from somewhere in CC! LOL

Yea, but.. Kinda look like this.. no wait... a little darker.... :crazy1: :hmm5:

Id love to find a way to let my sweetheart off the hook.. so to speak...

The problem is that many men are color blind so getting someone else to consult on the color change is sometimes a good thing.

Trying to read shades of blue from a seachem copper test kit is near impossible . I have always wished they would address this-Kieth

Thanks for asking....

It has been a bouncy 2 weeks!!!

Somehow I have cross contaminated the 375 DT as the Sailfin looks like she has ich. I am going to go to 1.018 / 84' - Garlic and feed well... see how that goes...

It looks like I will be replaceing the 375gal Day Tank due to the gouge in the glass. if the ich still persists in the DT then I will investigate more drastic measures...

Now, your question...
Of course I am almost way too cautious dosing the cupramine that is the fish's best interest... I am soooo paranoid of a OD..... IE: 36hrs ago, tested @ .032 mg/L ... so to increase to .040 / 81gal add 2.8ml.. i added 1.0ml, recheck 12hrs later... .035 .... added 1.0ml ... 12hrs later, tested ... not much of a change.... did not add any more... recheck 6 hrs later, .42 ??

not using my eyes.... my sweetheart & her best friend (Pharmacist) eyes....

Am i being over paranoid???

The purple tang was being a bit aggressive towards the ailing Foxface and Blonde so I divided the 75gal w/ eggcrate. The blonde and Foxface that looked like they were not doing well are now eating well and moving around.
the purple tang now does show ich spots that she didnt before. the Anthias and lamrick seem unphased by any of it.

Unrelated Note.... have had a few deaths in the 125 that has been stable for a while... about 2 - 3 weeks separate the deaths of : Firefish, Jester Gobi, anthias, then the other anthias, then yesterday a cleaner shrimp??

i took the body of the anthias and soaked in ro/di ... noticed a few small worms, so I did a 40% w/c & treated the entire 125 w/ Prazi-Pro..

BTW.. my fish came from Dallas...

Been a busy week!!!

What is that treating? Garlic has no value in parasite treatment, 1.018 is not a meaningful change in salinity.

The Sailfin tang that is in the 375 looks like he has a few ICH spots.
He is 1 of 4 fish in a 96x30x30 along with a Flame Hawk, Long Nose Hawk, Marine Betta. the others look okedokee...

The hope is that a well fed, happy fish at 84' & 1.018 will be able to resist the parasite.

I believe this maybe the only intank treatment option?

What Test Kit are you using for the copper, and where did you find it in CC? This API Test Kit may be the root of my problems I am thinking...and also, from my research I am not sure that you will be able to rid the tank of ich with the hyposalinity/temp spike, is catching the fish to qt impossible? I used a gatorade bottle and a cube of mysis shrimp to catch a super quick wrasse once!

I have been warned about using a test kit different than the medication.
I use cupramine (seachem) and the copper test made by seachem. I got the kit on Amazon.

2 years ago I did a bad thing and ended up with a bad ich outbreak.
It felt like the stress induced by catching the 12 swimmers caused more of a fatal blow.
I had tried Hypo & TTM before I tried the Copper.
After much reading I am of the opinion that Ich and or the opportunity for Ich to appear is resident in almost all tanks. If the occupants are kept well fed and happy (low stress) than all is well. Much like the common cold, fish are stressed, or feel food deprived.. the ich can take a hold.

My long time friend and 25+ year SW fish store owner and I have decided to try this method. If the sailfin starts to become lethargic or no longer food aggressive than I will pull him.

I will be replacing my tank in 6 - 8 weeks so everyone will be out regardless...

oh yea.... anyone want a deal on a 375? 96x30x30, only 1 scratch...

The kit I ordered is scheduled to arrive today.
You are welcome to it if you need it.

Ah man I really appreciate the offer, i went ahead and overnighted the seachem copper test kit from amazon and it was still only about $17....not to bad. I'm halfway hoping I have been reading the api kit wrong but my math should be right as far as the dosage and it should be about 0.45 or so unless the terracotta pot i have in the QT is absorbing the copper....we will find out tonight. Hey have you heard of Ich becoming immune to copper? It would make sense, and if its true I could have a real problem on my hands, but I've also heard of fish stores using copper in low dosage to keep algae down, which seems like would cause almost all the strains of ich to become immune eventually....going on 5 weeks in qt with no improvement (But no decline either!)

the pot will absorb copper. pull out the pot, put in a couple of 4" PVC fittings.
(i have a Short elbow, long elbow and "t" 2 of each) in the 75.

I have not heard of LFS's using copper to reduce algae. I think that would be bad. I have been told that the PROPHYLACTIC treatment in Copper is not advised as it CAN hurt the longevity of the fish.

The purple has been in for over 2 weeks @ .040 and still has spots.
I am doing a 20gal w/c and then redose.

THe 375 (w/ Sailfin) is now @ 84' / 1.018. eatting 4x a day frozen soaked in Garlic, Zoe & Selcon. the sailfin is eatting very well and have not noticed spots :spin1:

I do recall reading 2 years ago about other who had incurable ich..??

What test kit are you using again? Is it the seachem one with the little siphon bulb, dropper, and mysterious powder? (LOL)....I Just got mine in yesterday and sure enough my copper levels have been at about 0.20....not the 0.4 or 0.5 the stupid API Test Kit has been reading to me. I added copper Wednesday Night (Today is Friday for future use...) and did a 5 gal water change on the 30 gal qt and the next morning the hippo tang's "welps" (Much worse looking than ich looks on other fish) were completely gone! First time i've seen them gone in a month of qt....I am infuriated with API right now....so I think ill start the two weeks of copper again from today...

I am using the seachem copper test that is so very difficult to read.

It looks like role- reversal in the 75HT... the Foxface and Blonde Naso looked really bad 10 days ago. very lethargic and not eating much. Now they look great and are eating like pigs...
the Purple tang and lamrick angle dont look so good. the purple is covered in spots now and the lamrick pec. fins are looking tattered so i have risen the copper (about .015 per dose) going to full dose of .5mg/L

very interested to see the results after raising to .5mg/L.....all mine have been doing great since getting the new test kit and keeping copper levels up. So all of the above fish are in the same tank? I'm no expert but I do remember reading about tattered fins being a different disease than ich possibly. Might look into that!
