Ich - on a mandarin

My new mandarin is pretty darn sick. I'm not sure how I'd catch it out of the tank (a quick siphon with large tubing? ), but I'm thinking he needs a freshwater dip/bath to alleviate what looks like Ich to me. When I bought it, I felt it was acting just a little odd but was so pretty. Impulse buy. meh. :(

The irony is I just posted recently how unusual it is for mandarins to get Ich, and then this happened within mere days. I've only had it a couple of days, but I'm thinking I should try to catch it and do something. Any advice?

All evening I watched this fish and it never moved from that spot. It was alive and breathing at lights out, but I don't know what tomorrow will bring.

I've never put a mandarin in quarantine because of their feeding requirements, but I hate to just do nothing.
 
Sorry to hear melev, thats the first time I seen a mandarin get ich, most people say they are pretty tolerante of ich. Does your mandarin eat any prepared foods? If so you can try the bottle trap. Hmm this is pretty tough I am sorry I cant think of anything that can help ya out. Maybe scope some pods or use some sort of net to sift them out of the sand and feed it to the mandarin while its in a qt?
 
I got in two or three days ago. It really hasn't even had time to get comfortable and start eating, imho.

I just checked on him, and he's sleeping on the sand a few inches from that spot.
 
Melev, I figured you of all people would QT anything new being that you have been in the hobby a long time. Guess I was wrong.
 
x.x you know whats going to happen right? once you introduce a fish that has ich all of your fish will get it, unless they have a tough immune system. thats gotta suck, any plans on what you are going to do with your other livestocks?
 
Since I believe ich can come in on anything, not only fish, I'm not going to panic about this. My reef is very stable and all the livestock is healthy. Over all the years, I've never seen a tank wipeout due to ich, only read it online. I'm not going to say it is a myth, but I've never seen it personally nor known anyone in our club that that has happened to.

I tend to believe it was other circumstances that lead to loss of all fish. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong now and post proof. ;)
 
Well not sure if this would count as proof, I once had a hippo tang that got ich and it spread it to every fish and when the others recovered they got it again. The hippo never got better and in the end it killed everything, it took down my pair of clowns and a niger trigger, o.O, triggers are supposidly pretty good at dealing with this and clowns are tough aswell.
 
When I had my 55g up and running, I got a Yellow Tang that broke out in ich due to the Blue Tang chasing it mercilessly. It was dead within 36 hours, covered in Ich. That tank was up for 2 more years and I never had an Ich outbreak on any other fish, and there were 9 in that tank. Again, I think stability is key. I won't fool myself into thinking it was ich-free.

Regardless, back to the mandarin in question. Anyone else have specific advice?
 
I'd like to focus on the Mandarin situation if possible. I noticed since your first post that you have some knowledge on this topic, based on the comment under your username.
 
Sorry to hear about the ich Marc. I am crossing my fingers. i understand why you didnt qt the manarin. He would have died in a qt tank without the proper food.
Dont pay any mind to Freed, he snipes like that all over RC. Always looking for a fight :(

I had a mandarin that had ich as did the rest of the tank. All the fish that were left in the tank untreated died... except the mandarin. He recovered nicely. It wasn't as bad as the pic above but it was very evident.
 
Just trying to pick your mind to find out what you know about ich. Engine 7 please keep your comments to yourself about what you "think" you know about me. Tryin to problem solve here.
 
Mandarins CAN be kept in QT and can be trained to feed on prepared foods. Mysis, brine(poor choice), and other foods have been tried with success. You can try black worms too.

I've read ATJ's articles on Ich repeatedly, heard presentations on it, and read up on some of Steven Pro's work.

None of these deal with Ich with a fish like a Mandarin, which is why I came to this forum in case someone had something definitive to share.

I don't even know if a mandarin could tolerate hyposalinity nor copper, as they differ from other fish with their oily coating.
