I recently went through a bad Ich outbreak when I moved from a 380 gallon tank to a 600 gallon tank, the outbreak was so bad that the fish were completely encrusted with white spots and hardly able to see and after two days of running a UV sterilizer things look way better and the fish are eating and swimming around. I would definately recommend a UV sterilizer and a good skimmer for large tanks.

I'm using a Rainbow Life Guard (Pentair Aquatics). I'm running the 40 watt which is designed for a 300 gallon tank, but I don't have the tank full. Once the tank is full and running I will have close to 700 gallons of water and then I will add a second unit, which is cheaper then buying a single 80 watt unit. One big thing is flow rate, you want a slower flow rate to kill parasites therefore with a 40 watt you want to run at no more then 800 GPH.


Quarantine is great and should be done, but in my case the fish were already established, they got sick due to the move and the bacterial death in the live rock which caused some ammonia.

I HAVE TO DISAGREE A LIL, I RUN OZONE 200-250 AND UV 36W I STILL GET IT.ALL FISH HAVE IT ON THEM, IT JUST WHEN THEY GET ALL WORKED UP IT SHOWS, KIND OF LIKE US LIL BIT WHEN WE GET SICK WE HAVE THE BACTERIA OR VIRUS IN OUR BLOOD THEN SOMETHING TRIGGERS IT.
