As hottuna noted, quinine drugs also seem to kill off algae (I use chloroquine, it does the same thing). They also seem to kill a number of multi-celled animals, flatworms and rotifers for certain, probably others as well. The net result of this is that in SOME tanks, there is a ammonia peak that coincides with all this biomass dying off...so it is a good idea to monitor for that, maybe use one of those ammonia alert badges.
