Ich Resurfaces in QT after 4 Wks, What to do?

All,

As hottuna noted, quinine drugs also seem to kill off algae (I use chloroquine, it does the same thing). They also seem to kill a number of multi-celled animals, flatworms and rotifers for certain, probably others as well. The net result of this is that in SOME tanks, there is a ammonia peak that coincides with all this biomass dying off...so it is a good idea to monitor for that, maybe use one of those ammonia alert badges.

Jay, so I found somewhere online to purchase chloroquine, and found directions on an RC thread here that read:

Hi Kevin,
There is a treatment mentioned in the book that has allowed leaving the inverts in the aquarium. Have you read that?
As for treatment, maintain proper specific gravity (1.024 – 26) and recommend an initial 20 mg/l, so that’s twice the amount you’re planning on. Thereafter, a 10mg/l dosage every 7 – 10 days for the next three treatments. (total of 4 treatments) Of course, during treatment, any phosphate removing product (CP will kill-off any algae) should be discontinued, as should activated carbon and/or ozone and skimming/UV. Once treatments are concluded, those products/devices and/or Poly-Filters can be used as needed.
As for water changes, a small change (20 gallons in your size aqu.) between each additional treatment is thought helpful, and also at the end of treatment. Otherwise, CP will be removed by the media mentioned above.
Keep me informed, and what city do you live in, as I’m tracking all CP data.
Hope this helps,

I'm debating switching to use this as it seems my luck with Cupramine hasn't been that great! Would you recommend it, and if so, do the directions above sound good?

Thanks so much!

Oh yea, and since this is in my QT, the biomass die off shouldn't be a concern.

Be careful with the quinine sulphate.I had been sold on it as an alternative to cupramine.I used it on a few fish and it worked well. Then i got an atlantic blue tang with obvious signs of ich.I used it as i had in the past and it appeared it had worked as well.I was wrong and the fish ended up having ich still.I am of the opinion that while it may work on some strains of ich others it is not effective against.Cupramine on the other hand seems to work 100% of the time when dosed at full strength for 4 weeks.I did this all in a qt tank and would not try in my display. If you are going to use quinine then make sure you give very ample time after the treatment for observation to make sure it worked.I should also add that after the first treatment i called national fish pharmacy and they said to retreat which i did with the same results.I will say that the fish never showed any signs of stress from the treatments nor did they stop eating which is why i was wanting this stuff to work so badly 100% of the time.I also had no problem with it effecting my biological filter in my qt that some people report-Kieth

Good point kieth71...the only reason I tried it was because I had a tank full of live rock...and the copper would have ruined the rock and my chances to house inverts in the future if I decided to..
It worked out good ,but I am still going for a second treatment just to be sure..
Cupramine is an old (safe) standby for me also..
