Ich Resurfaces in QT after 4 Wks, What to do?

So, like the title says, my Blueline Angel is showing a few spots of ich (2-3, not many). The QT has been at full strength Cupramine to the best of my knowledge for 4 weeks now.

I don't test as much as I should, but when I do my weekly water change I redose the amount that I pulled out.

I was going to put the fish in my DT on Nov 1, but now am not so sure what to do. Another 4 weeks of Cupramine, or what?

It does suck, but at least the fish are still doing very well. Just want to be sure I knock it out before introducing into my display.

Yeah, I know the feeling david, but you must not be at full strength. Check again with the seachem test kit. You already know you need to restart the clock with another 4 weeks of cupramine....how old was the cupramine you used?

It should be fairly new, definitely no more than 4-6 months old.

I thought this stuff isn't supposed to precipitate from the water column!

IDK - our policy is to quarantine a fish for 6 weeks AFTER the last visible symptom of a disease was noted. So - if a fish arrives and never develops a disease, it goes through copper and prazi and it is out in 6 weeks. If another fish is treated the same way, but Ick starts at the end of week 5, it gets another 6 weeks of Q starting at the point that the last trophont was seen on its body.
This may sound like a bit obsessive, but it does work well...

Jay, thanks so much for chiming in. I certainly appreciate your suggestion and maybe that's what I'll do.

Do you know anything about the use of Cupramine and what would could have caused this (I'm unsure what meds you use)? I don't test daily, however each week after my water change I test to be sure I'm at 0.5. Not sure how there could still be Ich in the system.

I'd say your copper level is slowly lowering over the course of a week... I'd start retreating but what I do with copper is test it nightly. From what I understand ich reattaches to fish during a lights off phase (ie nighttime) so that's when the ich is vulnerable and that is when you want to be sure you're at full strength.

I tested every night an never had any ich showing after just 2 weeks of treatment although Seachem recommends doing it for three weeks.

Sometimes even after just one day I would see lowered Cupramine levels in my QT, like down to 0.45 in just one day from 0.50 the night before, I can easily see how after a week your levels would get out of whack.

I recently tried quinine sulfate instead of cupramine on some badly infected fish..
In 7 days they pulled out from being almost dead to spotless & eating like pigs..
I am amazed what this medication did...
will probably do another 7 days after a large water change just to be sure...

hottuna, do you have any worries about ich that is not in the cyst stage? Is a 14 day treatment long enough with quinine sulfate?

I used quinine sulphate, I don't think it helped at all but I ordered it from Nation Fish Pharmaceuticals, they were great to deal with, delivered quickly. Maybe I didn't use it long enough??

Dont know your situation tracey2, but it worked wonders for me...

No problem Wrench... I have to admit I was skeptical about using the quinine in that form-heard many negative things that it might cause..But it went fine ,no ammonia spikes ,everything still alive on my liverock...and one GREAT side effect I didn't count on - IT WIPED OUT ALL TRACES OF HAIR ALGAE IN THE TANK !!
(had quite a bit before that)

Did you dose it in your display? I'm assuming it's fish only? I plan on trying it out in my QT tank. I recently had to remove my achilles tang due to a pesky problem with what I thought was ich. After almost two weeks in QT with copper the problem persists. I was told by an experienced breeder to try the quinine sulfate.
