Ich strikes in our display

heuerfan, thanks for posting your experience. I'm also of the mind that I don't want to sit back and hope. I really like my achilles, and they're known as being very fragile and susceptible to ich. I think think his long term outlook is signficiantly better if I make sure there is no ich lurking in the tank.

Jeff...no prob...offer stands if you need it....remember Jeff if you do hypo them all wait it out at least 6 weeks instead of 4....i only agree with the qt for tangs because of their sensitivity issues... good luck man...keep the achilies the healthiest even above the pbt because like you said ....they are VERY sensitive. keep us posted.

We always do an additional 4 weeks in hypo from the point where no ich cysts are noticeable, so the fish wind up being in hypo for usually 6 weeks or longer. We basically start the clock ticking from the time when no more ich is visible on the fish, to cover the full life and reproductive cycle of the parasite.

When my two tangs had ich, they did not have it very long after the introduction of my clean shrimp and lots of Kent Marine Garlic.
Also I heard ich does not like warm tanks, and my tank is anywhere from 80 to 82. Between these 3 my two tangs have never had another out break of ich.

PS: I dose the garlic by letting it sit in their food for over an hour, and letting the seaweed sheets I feed them absorb some too.

I have successfully used a cleaner shrimp before to clean up this problem. Cleaner shrimp ROX!
cleaner shrimp only eat external parasites ;)

id say try a hypo treatment first and if it doesnt clear up use copper as a last resort

I don't QT either and my beautiful Purple tang was pretty close to death full of ICK and cloudy eyes. I picked up a bottle of Selcon from Big-Als and started feeding them everyday a cube of Fozen Krill soaked in Selcon and within two weeks my Tang is now gorgeous!!! I swear by it now!!!

Jeff.....I had the same happen to me over a year ago. I removed all my fish into quarantine tanks using hypo salinty. This seems to work the best over copper treatment. I slowly dropped the salinty to 1.008 for 5 weeks and then slowly brought it back up. Using copper you would need a good copper test kit and must dose the right amount. Leaving my 150 reef without fish for 6-7 weeks broke the ich cycle. I did lose 2 fish but they were in bad shape when I finally decided to remove all my fish. I feel your pain and I am sure you and your fish will get through this. I do have a 20 and 10 gal you can have if you need more tanks...

Sorry, I've been meaning to get back and post an update. The ich spots dropped off the fish, and there were no visible signs of ich just 2 days after we spotted it. Much faster recovery than I expected, which is a testament to the overall health of the fish. Based on that, we decided to hold off on doing anything too drastic. We did add a 36w UV sterilizer this weekend, and we're going to see what happens. If we have severe recurrances going forward, then we'll need to decide when to pull the fish and treat.

Jeff they shouldn't reoccur often but if you plan to add a new addition even being only 1" in size I can guarantee at least one of them will have a couple spots pop out...

My last addition was my hamlet which I had qt-ed but simply to beef up his health with good foods and vitamins... once I added him my blue trigger must have broken out with about 7 spots(cists) whatever you want to call em...either way 3 days later he is all cleared up...adding that uv was a good decision as well.

Although it won't kill the entire ich population it holds it to a level where it doesn't go haywire on reproduction.

Glad to hear everything is working out so far!:smokin:
