This picture is actually one from another reefer's tank; however, one of these just started growing in my tank on a frag that I have had for years. It looks exactly the same and I am not sure of this is some sort of LPS or some possible pest. It looks to be a blasto or something similar. The size of the one in my tank is about the size of pencil eraser...any thoughts?

See that's what is bizarre! I thought the same thing since it definitely looks like the skeletal structure of cynaria...but I have never had any cynaria in my system. I did have a plate coral in my system about 6 months ago and it was brutally attacked by several angels and ripped to shreds...end of that.:sad2: About three months ago I noticed some fluorescence on the dead plate skeleton under my LED's and it looked like a tiny piece of the plate had survived but then was quickly abolished when I started using probiotics. Now that I got the low nutrient system in check and my corals are starting to recover, potassium level is back to normal, etc...I notice this little guy growing.

Okay...so I understand from the looks it may "look" like a plate or Cynaria; however, lets use a different question for identification. Do plate corals or Cynaria-Scolymia-lobo-wellso or even brain corals, attach themselves to rocks? In other words; do they grow their skeletal structure to marry the body to another mass? I've never seen this happen...which leads me to doubt the types that are being presented.

My understanding was that for scolies and cynarina, they're attached to the rock until they reach a certain size, then detach. I wouldn't be surprised if other similar LPS behaved in a like manner.

you could smash a plate coral into 100 pieces and each little piece would grow out. i think your angels did a frag job for you.

I remember hearing something like that also.
