ID Help Needed

I thought this fish was A. clarkii. Others on RC believe it is allardi but allardi has a white tail. The pair came from a Maldives shipment. Any thoughts?

I think it is a clarkii, too. One of those regional variants. He will loose the white on the tail, or it will be very thin stripe. I think he is a juvi and melanistic right now. Let’s see how they mature. I can also see where allardi guess is coming from. Juvis are the toughest to ID. Give it time.

I agree, I think all three are clarkii varieties. I see so many juvenile clownfish at the importers that I can't positively identify and you can't always know with certainty were they were collected. If I have the room I buy several clownfish juvies from the same shipment that look alike. Ultimately I try to figure out what they are. There are more undescribed species than the current 27 or so.

still only seeing allardi with these fish. i think that head stripe is unmistakable with that species.

additionally, in my experience, all clarkii have a complete tail stripe even as juveniles. the broken tail stripe is definitely a feature of allardi (and other similar fish like chrysopterus, which these are not.)

I agree with Marina. A clarkii area variant is my guess also. I think there are a lot more variants of the "œclarkii" family out there. Just look how many chrysopterus variants there are. The more collecting areas are explored the more we will find.
