So he got the rock from me and I have these polyps in my tank. They grow on the lower or shady parts of the rocks. They are neither Aiptesia or a mat. More like individual polyps that spread. I have them growing right next to coral even touching with no ill effect.

yeah , its not aiptesia... i had it in my tank a few years back didn't do much and added some moment to my tank till i put something on top of it....then i didn't see it again.....i really wonder what it actually is.
