Never seen one. The PE is strange. They are huge and fan out. Not a great pic had to turn lights out to get it. It was sold as purple dragon of course nothing like the red dragon in structure.

lol there is a purple dragon? You should see my green dragon bro, and my orange one too...I also have a yellow dragon and teal dragon. I havent heard of the purple dragon, though. Too many dragons IMO

I looked up in my Corals of the world book, but I did not see any Acropora dragons. Sorry.

Yea I knew the name was false but it is the coolest SPS frag I have seen in my LFS. Hoping someone on here has one. Polyp are huge on it purple with whitish blue on the ends.

the purple dragon was just the marketed name so why is it false? you were originally asking for species id right? its difficult enough to id with a clear pic, gl with that pic

Market name? it was a frag from another reefer they traded in. I would figure with a name purple dragon it is one they named on their own since I have never seen another one online like it. I will see if I can get another pic tonight that is better and hopefully someone else has one and will respond

marketed meaning advertised. they probably piggy backed on the red dragon acropora name from rr to attract attn or some hobbyist just named it purple dragon because he liked the name despite it being a different species from the rr one. the term dragon is tainted with many reefers so i would steer clear of calling anything dragon unless you're positive its the same species as the citr red dragon and even then some ppl won't like it being called that for lineage reasons, so tread carefully

for me I could care less. call it what you like and if its a nice acro in its own right ppl like me will pay a premium for it.

Yeah the name calling is getting real stupid lately. Purple dragon? Lol you can't be serious...

Tell your Lfs he a freaking joke If he's serious.

He has no idea what it is either. He got the name from the local reefer. I will get a better pic and post it tonight hopefully.

Do the polyps have alternating colors on the tentacles and a green mouth? You could call it the Purple Hornet PE Dragon and latch on to THREE price inflating bandwagons at once.

J/K, I know you didn't name it. Those polyps do look interesting, I'd like to see a photo of the colony it came from.

Watch it, I got flamed for trying to discredit 'designer' names.:twitch:

I won't flame you for that - in fact, I'll commend you and share the flaming for also saying that designer names are ridiculous. Acros and montis are bad enough, but zoanthids are just out of hand.

I have often wondered what it means to be a "reverse gorilla nipple" zoanthid. In fact, I stopped by the Great Ape house at the zoo the other day and looked at the gorillas and their nipples. I just don't see it...

because naming corals by their scientific id is next to impossible and less appealing. and who's fault is that? whether you like it or not, ppl like those kind of names, vendors and hobbyists. I have seen some hobbyists bash the red dragon and then turn around and become a vendor and sell red dragon frags for the same prices. I understand (sorta) your side but this isn't just a hobby, its a business for many as well
