I'd like to make my own surface skimmer

Thinking about going to local hardware store and buying a ujoint pvc tubing so the intake tube will end up halfway out the water then i can just cut the tube with slots every half inch or so.

I looked at retail and the Fluval soloution looks really really elcheapo and does not look like it will last.
