ID - Montipora

SPStoner,
You make great points and I would suspect that the information about what is a hot commodity in the industry definately makes it back to the divers, it just makes good business sense.

In fact, some of the most sought after name corals, like the PM, and the Pink lemonade, rarely garner any attention in my tank from visitors

Figures, huh? I remember with my old mixed reef everyone that was not into the coral thang always oooohhhed and ahhhhed over my valonia algae...lol

. The divers who collect these things, for the most part, don't know a Montipora Danae from a Mitsubishi Eclipse. They certainly don't know what a "Pokerstar Monti" is. However, once there is a demand for a certain color morph, the guys will seek out the specific coral and thus flood the market with what everyone calls "lookalikes" but what could possibly all be from the same mother colony.

This is the theory I subscribe to as well, and well put at that :D

I would think it would be short sighted of us to assume that the diver would never come back to the same patch of lets say a "PM" and it gets distributed and becomes what it is known in the hobby, for him to never return for future harvests and for more pieces of the exact same colony to be distributed to another source ever again? These guys are locals and probably know there waters really well, some of these corals naturally grow in certain sections anyway. Seems to me the chances would be greater to recieve the genetically same coral than not unless your dealing with different suppliers then of course you'll get different locals and genetic diversity.

Great point. I think we would all be surprised by how few actual exporting people there were in say, Fiji or the Solomons. It's not a situation, I believe, that just anybody with a boat can collect and export. There are permits required, and I believe they are very limited as to how many they give out. From what I have heard of the governments in these small island nations, it probably amounts to whoever pays the largest "permit fees":D

I will also say the purple monster has been around for almost a decade yet they aren't abundant and in everyones tanks. So how come this very very popular coral is not collected as anormal import?

There are trully unique corals and to think other wise is short sighted. Corals are animals not every single coral is going to be the same .

It would be like saying all humans are the same which clearly we all have our own minds and traits.

Those are both names applied to essentially the same coral by different vendors. Pokerstar, Supergirl, and LA Lakers Montipora were all coined by various online coral vendors. They are all apparently Montipora Danae Blue or Blue Purple base with Green polyps. Technically, you should only apply the name if the coral was acquired from the "namer", or can be traced there, although it is safe to say that this coral is being both collected and aquacultured in large numbers, as they can be found at any given time on 3 or 4 different websites for sale. I have, either through purchase, or trade, all three originals, and I can say that they are without a doubt the same species. They will sometimes develop orange, red, and yellow polyps along the growing edge, which is very cool ( this is what the Tyree Rainbow Monti is)

Thanks for clearing that up for us...

Thats why I like Good OL' LATIN...
Montipora Danae *color varient blue base/red polyp*... a mouthful, but much less complicated... I think.... hum....

i have an analogy and i know not everyone can relate to it....................

this may be a post that gets deleted and i hear trash for but...

its like marijuana......."bubblegum" "blueberry" etc etc....if it is all tender, juicy and tasty then it all gets the job done.......

now everyone has opinions formed about me but i dont care..

analogy couldnt be truer to those who know what i am talking about

Atleast we got to two pages on this thread and not one arguement :celeb1:

For quick and easy description terms, I think using the coined names for this coral perfectly fine. Using them to establish a value under false pretense or simply lying about the authenticity of it's origin would be wrong.

If I can't use the name "Supergirl" my pic is still worth 1000 slobbery key boards. :lolspin:

Who said there arent unique corals? Who said every coral is going to be the same? I know there are many corals out there that will morph 5 different ways to sundown depending on its enviroronment. From color change, to pillaring, digitating, to encrusting, etc. Actually that you mention it theres alot of corals identical to the purple monster coming in from Solomon Island that Dr. Mac and Atlantis have for sale right now, and Dr. Mac has it for a sweet price at that!;)

why is everyone freaking out?

All I asked was what happened to Pokerstar?... I thought the name changes or something... or there was an ACCTUAL difference..

stop freaking out everyone!

Slojmn,

I know that many posters here are grammatically challanged and i normally wouldn't comment.

However, your sig lists you as a teacher.

You could at least use spell check or a dictionary.

It is spelled; blasphemy.

Sentence structure needs some work also.

I know, petty s#@$, and the mods may not like this, but you are teaching our kids and there a lot of them on here that can barely put a coherent sentence together.

OK, flame off.

"Sentence structure needs some work also."
That is a example of a incomplete sentence. Are you teaching from example ?

Two pages and a 1/8, We almost had three !

I didn't hit the shift key for the "I" .

That is not an incomplete sentence. Except to add "Your"

Show the faults "pee wee" or Herman ( if the censor doesn't like that)
That's your avatar, busted for indecent exposure in Sarasota and kicked off TV for the last 10 years.

I don't claim to be a teacher.

I just think a teacher should be able to spell and set a good example when responding in a public forum.

Regards,

Thanks, I had no idea who Peewee was.

If you can exspose yourself in the Oval office while married during business hours, you can do it anywhere.

I hope I don't get too bored when I am old and retired.
