while its similar to a blue ridge I have yet to find a photo of a blue ridge with this corals structure.

Douglam, I am not following you on acropora generale, do you have a link that you could share with me?

It started to bleach under 1000w's of halide on the sand bed. It came from a tank that had 750w of halide lighting. Its now under a overhang and shaded and seems to do better there.

It's odd that it has no axial coralites. Isn't that one of the distinguishing characteristics of an acro?

I do not think its an acro.

Blue ridge looks like sps but is really a soft coral. This is not blue ridge.

It looks like an acropora, but one that had most of it's branches fragged off and has recently healed over those spots. It would be impossible to give a positive ID on just a picture alone, especially one that is like that. Give it 6 months to grow out, but you will never get a true ID on it IMO.

I think it's an acropora that has poorly defined coralites. I have an acro that looks similar and is slowly regaining coralites. It may be that the acro was in a very unfavorable environment. I guarantee you that that acro is a very hardy one. I dipped mine in a very cold iodine solution because it had red bugs and it slimed and turned pale. I thought I would lose it but it bounced back and is coloring up nicely.

By the process of elimination, it can't be a montipora because it doesn't have any verrucae or ridges. It is not a Stylophora for obvious reasons. Now it could be either a Acropora or Pocillopora.

To me the coensenum is very smooth, and the corallites are immersed. But it does look like there is some branchlet formation, from the picture. So the axial corallites and radial corallites are present. I will lean on saying it is an Acropora, but a very rare one indeed. I will try to find you an ID.

there is not enough pigment yet to show a difference. I can see a few dots of purple that are growing larger and there is a purple tint on some areas too. I think in 5-6 months it will be 100% purple. It would be cool if it turns out to be a purple monster.

Definetly not an acro since it does not have the axial coralites. Could be a porties sp. but doesnt seem round enough.

How large is the coral? Where did it come from?

Looks like a coral thats been growing(or trying to) without proper light, flow, water perameters; or some combination of the three.

its about the size of a beer bottle. I bought it from another reefer who did not know too much about it when he got it either. I agree it appears neglected. It bleached on the top when I put it in my tank ( in a shaded area) and now those bleached areas are turning dark purple and its showing rapid growth. Its now under 1270 watts of lighting, a mix of 20k and 10k halides and strong flow. I also feed too. Its PE is now double than the day I got it.
