I picked up a piece of live rock form my LFS the other day and this fellow came with. The guy from the LFS was not sure what is was due to him being new. so I was just wondering if you guys could help me out.

Kenya Tree. Pluck that off there and throw it in the trash or you will have a million of them.

I was going to say colt coral... at least it looks more like my colt than my Kenya ... kenyas bunch/ball up when stressed and unhappy

I am 100% sure that is a Kenya tree. I had 55 gallons FULL of those things after an outbreak. They will frag themselves and the pieces float around every where. Beautiful coral, but they are not even close to worth the headache.

When you touch the coral, is it kind of slimy to the touch, or somewhat abrasive?

Could be Capnella, but judging by the green tint, it is the slower growing variety. Which is still a weed by many people's standards.

The shape though, seems more like Nephthea or Sinularia to me. Capnella tends to look more like cauliflower when retracted.

It is a little of both the base is slimy but the stock is abrasive

How hard would it be to frag it so I can move it to a different place?

cut the stalk in half.. and place it elsewhere or cut it as close to the rock as possible

It's not a capnella "Kenya tree". It's obviously some sort of green branching sinularia or nephthea that's gotten browned out from not having enough light. Let it grow and see how it ends up looking before you do anything drastic. Throwing corals away is just irresponsible. Even brown capnella still has value to the right people. I sell tons of blue/green and even the brown capnella to people all the time for $5-$10 each. Anyway, if you want to frag it, take a clean razor blade or scissors and slice off a branch. If you just want to move the whole coral, break off a little rock underneath the whole coral and glue it down to whatever new rock you want it on. Hope this helps.
