We have a candycane at work that we got from saltwaterfish. Since day one, we've noticed this little "polyp" hanging out and have been trying to figure out what it is. Any suggestions?

Hard to tell from the pic. Is it completely soft, or does it have a skeletal base? What does it do when you touch it or blast it with water?

it kinda acts like a mushroom so i would say completely soft. the reason i'm thinking along the line of lps is it seems to have feeders toward the center

It looks it might be some kind of antler anemone since it's soft. If it was an LPS then it would have a hard skeleton.

The skeleton may be there. Take a look at the dead sekleton on the base of the candy cane. If it has a skeleton I would say Cynaria, but I am leaning towards a shroom of some sort.

Jason,

I'll doublecheck tomorrow, but I don't think there is a skeleton under it, it's pretty much like a mushroom. There are 8-10 feeder type tips halfway toward the center that you can't really see in the pic.

majano anemone...a pest. if you take the candycane out of the water for a second or two, you should be able to flick the anemone off with a toothpick...or use joe's juice if you have it.

I don't think it's one of these ( I work with Jason BTW that's why i'm chiming in here.) since we actually have another rock with like 12 of the Majano Anemone's on it and they look nothing like this.

From the looks of the pic, it looks like you have the perfect opportunity to shave it off with a razor, then you'll know for sure if your dealing with a corallimorph or not. Then let it settle on some substrate or wrap it with fishing line, bridal viel whatever, so you can safely watch it grow before deciding on if it's a nuicance or not :) Looks cool so far
