Hope the pic is clear enough. This is before he was put in his tank at my house. Since that time he has been so fast & hard to photograph. The light area around his tail looks in person like some kind of damage that I'm hoping will go away after he molts. It is not just a light-colored stripe, as it appears in this pic.

Thanks in advance.

The damage to the telson and 6th abdomenal segment are pretty severe, but there is a pretty good chance that it will successfully molt.

The animal appears to be an adult male Gonodactylaceus falcatus. This is a very common gonodactylid found from Australia and the Guam to East Africa. It was introduced into Hawaii from the Fhilippines in the 1950's and now is quite common on Oahu. Maximum size is about 65 mm.

Thank you so much. The damage does look serious in person but I've had him for almost a month and he doesn't act "damaged" as far as I can tell. Very active, mobile. I'm trying to feed him quite a varied diet so he gets the nutrients he needs to heal/molt.

Thanks again for the ID.

He just molted and the "tail" damage looks much better...not quite 100% though from what I can tell. He also lost a dactyl but I've read it'll likely grow back. He gets plenty of live crustacean food to smash, so it's anyone's guess why he lost it in the molt.
