ID this red macro please.

Peter,
That looks more like a brown than red algae....I would have guessed a Sargassum sp., but if so, it's bigger than any I've seen.

Hope someone else can be more help,

Lycka till,

Hey, that's a beauty.

Gracilaria is a highly variable species which drives people nuts when trying to identify it.

I think you have some in this specimen, and the specimen in the pic seems to be covered with the little spawning tubercules which sometimes appear on these.

I could be very very wrong, but that's my guess.
It's hard to see the arrangement of the parts at that angle. I do agree that it looks more in shape and arrangement like a Sargassum, but if it's red, I tend to want to lean toward Gracilaria, which tends to fool us anyway.

Thank you guys, I will try and find photos that correspond to these species. Any one else who can give me a definate ID?

It is blood red but the algae has turned towards yellow after installing stronger light (the shaded parts are red as well as specimens in other tanks where the lighting is less).

It was a hitchhiker from Indonesia.

Happy holidays!

Peter
