brown with tentacles & crawls up on the glass? sounds like a cirratulid polychaete. Chuck has a picture of one on his site listed as a sandbed hair worm. They gather detritus, particulates, etc. with their feeding tentacles & are considered beneficial.

Yes Telgian, I have removed your nobel prize winning photo of a bristle worm, I would rather remove it than to bow to the vanity of anyone over a worm....a worm!!....lol
I am also on my way out the door to go to the reef and collect a specimen which I can then get decent up close photos of its various mouth / body parts, seeing as how bristle worms are so adundant, it cant be too hard to find one in the ocean. oh, and thanks for contributing to a FREE resource that may have been of use to others. Sorry for the sarcassm, but I do not do vanity well.

Probably not quite the same thing, but Telgian I notice you have one of Halophila's pictures in your gallery. Did you ask permission to use it?
Charles I have a question about one of your pictures. The worm called polychase, is this just a juvenile of the common fireworm/bristleworm that I think we all have, or is it something different?

David, I believe if memory serves me right that it is a juvenile, although species was never determined other than being a polychase, which I understand covers alot of ground...lol
And to save yet another post, if anyone has any assumption that just because they post a photo it is covered under copyright laws, its not. It must be expressely stated in any one of a number of manners as having copyright claim. Without such a claim being made, it is public. This ends this topic for me.

I'm not too familiar with law in general, but common sense would lead me to believe that something posted in a public forum belongs to the public, if someone was to take something which was someone else's and use it for profit then I can see where there might be an issue, if not an issue with law then at the very least an issue of morality, but if the item has no copyright, and is being offered for free then I dont see the issue. I take photos of things and post them here so that they may benefit other people. I woud be flattered if someone felt one of my photos was worthy of being used as a teaching aid. If it was to be used for profit and permission was not asked and royalty not offered then I would have an issue.
I browse the gallery here occasionally when someone has question which would be best answered with a picture, and I use other members photos if need be. Is this illegal? If so then the gallery should not be open to the public. If you do not want someone else to use your photos then they should not be posted in such a way that anyone can veiw it or they should be copywritten. Just my opinion.
This thread really isnt the place for this discussion for further discussion the topic should be moved to the lounge and I would love to hear what some of the lawyer types have to say regarding this issue. I think its something which everyone should be aware of, but at the same time I would hate to see it cripple the way gallery works here as I feel it is a very important resource.

Then I respectfully suggest that you use the internet resources available to you and look up 'copyright', 'public domain', and 'fair use'. If you're feeling really ambitious, try 'DMCA' as well.

They are still my photos. I have made them visible to the public, but I have NOT placed them in the 'public domain' by doing so. That is what copyright protection is about.
One of my photos from my gallery here was placed on a website without asking my permission, or giving any indication that the photo is mine, or where it was taken from.
That made it look like the photo belonged to the person that runs the website.
Had the photo at least been attributed to me, I could have shrugged it off as 'fair use' IF I wanted to.

Anyone tracing the link in a RC picture to a gallery can generally figure out which gallery it came from.

You assume full responsibility for anything you post or transmit, and you grant Reef Central the right to display this material on its web sites. Reef Central makes no ownership claims to any material you post or transmit and agrees that all submitted materials, text, graphics and files remain the sole property of their creator, with individual exceptions such as contest entries specifically labeled as such when solicited."

I moderate critter id forums on 2 underwater photography boards. The subject of copyright & usage comes up for discussion quite a lot. Legally, copyright always belongs to the content creator even if it doesn't have a copyright mark or statement. The best way to refer to someone else's photo in a post is to provide a link to the image rather than including it.

Neat, I have quite a few of them and they appear to be reproducing. Are they filter feeders? They have some strange mouthparts. Hopefully thats the front end.
Mine are very small 1-2 cm at the most, and I see lots of them that are smaller.Where is Bob? The threads a month old and he hasnt responded.
