Ideal way to move to bigger tank

I just did this moving my 57 rimless inhabitants to my new (used) 75. I started with new ro/di water and salt, added new sand (about 50 lbs), added some extra pieces of live rock from the 57 to the 75, started the skimmer, heater and lights and got the sump going on the 75, plus a Koralia for flow.

After 2 weeks, ammonia and nitrites were zero, and just this past Sunday, I drained 57 rimless water into a bucket, netted the fish/inverts and put them into the bucket, moved all the live rock over to the 75 and arranged it, drip acclimated the fish/inverts and after an hour, added them to their new home with no losses. Turned out great! I've been slowly adding the old sand scoop by scoop to the new tank to deepen the sand bed - I haven't had any issues, just a couple scoops over the past couple of days.
I think this is the advantage of being able to have two systems up and running at once. I read salinity, temp and ph match is important...just using new water or even a 20% old water to new 80% would work if your existing tank has had a good amount of new saltwater changes ...then kh, ph, salinity etal would be closer between the tanks. Maybe it doesn't matter but the objective is to save 100% of the good guys.-S

Looking forward to seeing your Elos 160 xl ! i have the same tank and have modified a few things if you want to take a look or have questions.
Great choice IMO. I'm making some final decisions and should be up and running in a couple of weeks. One concern I have is going with the razor because it is meant for a slightly smaller tank and although its thin ...its wire mount looks a bit flimsey and bends. I have super high ceilings so no way to wire up lights...stuck with what attaches to the tank. It appears to be a good less expensive choice while buying the tank but I wonder if I'll want to punt it within 6 months and regret not going with something else. My #1 objective is more auto and plan to work on digital controller/mobile video of tank for trips so I can keep an eye on it from a distance but thats after I get this tank move finished. -S

I am wishing you the best of luck and hope you are very successful.I have one day to move the contents of my system, with the rest of my house contents,60 miles to a new location.I am having the LFS move it and get it restarted in my new pad.I have a nice Moorish Idol and CBB,I hope,do well. good luck to you!

Regarding nems and inverts, my 4 bubbletip nems and 2 maxi minis are doing great and my 2 sexy shrimp, 2 pom pom crabs, 3 emerald crabs, cleaner shrimp and fire shrimp are eating like pigs...the slow route with 2 systems running worked well for me. Adding some of my live rock to the new tank may have helped too, but I still waited for 2 weeks before the transfer. Best of luck!

I've read an opposite to this I think. I read my sand is super risky to use in new tank but my water is essential to keep the anemones happy...but I have no idea and have a lot of different articles and blog posts so I may just be confused-S

I would be interested to see where that came from. Its just water, so my suggestion was for ease on the move instead of transferring water and everything by eliminating the water. Just make sure you test the water before you transfer it. It would be ashame to transfer water with ammonia and other baddies.

You absolutely do not want to transfer the sand from an old tank to a new tank.

I bought my tank on craigslist a couple of months ago and arranged a really nice lfs owner to move it about 40 miles. I was so glad I didn't try to take that on myself. I moved the whole dirty tank ...water...sand that hadnt been vacuumed in 1.5 years. I had no idea the complications and mess and yet I just really watched for spikes and did a lot of water changes and no losses. Nothing in the tank was sensitive though and they were used to the conditions. Fingers crossed all goes really well for you too.

I looked further into this subject of using existing water and I've read info matching your advice...I'm not sure why I thought I needed the old water to keep the tank from cycling. I also read it may be a good idea to just put two filters in existing tank two weeks and then move one filter to the new tank. Some have had advice to put a cup or two of existing sand in new tank...but with filter and live rock it may not be necessary and I'd rather not. Thanks for challenging the idea of needing water from old tank.-S

Thats what I'm going with. The mount across the middle makes the 160xl look like a lunchbox and the other way is two mounts that don't go to the middle. I think im going with the two that arent quite to the middle and then just scape for less in the front that needs more light. I'm still looking to see if there are other mount options for radions.

SO excited! The new tank was delivered and barely fit through door. Didn't like the bottom of cabinet because it is open to floor. To protect the tile we changed to silver doors and cut down white doors and created bottom finished out with silicon. Sump etc coming next week. I really need to make a decision on lights. I want radion and hate the lunchbox mount. I'm hoping to find an alt mount option to lunchbox look and the two latched on but not reaching to being over the middle of the tank...Don't think I can go with anything but the radions even if mount options are not ideal. Unfortunately I can't hang lights from ceiling because ceiling is very high. Let me if know if you have ideas.

I am in the process of doing this now.The 180 is about done cycling.I will move all my liverock and inverts to the new tank, but will TTM all my fish and place them in qt.I will let the 180 sit fishless for 90 days before any fish are added.

2 Radion xr30w g3 pros -- I ordered the mount to go across the length. I'm planning on painting the mount silver. I think silver will look much better than black. Should have the tank going soon. My current 120g is doing well and no issues besides the noise and constantly required skimmer adjustments due to sump water level changes. Sooooo looking forward to ato and constant water levels.

Quick update. Still have plumbing parts and sand needed. I may be able to move to other tank on Saturday. For those who go with new sand -do you try to salvage snails or sift through old sand to keep from losing hiding inhabitants? I noticed a clam in my sand alive so its ashame to kill off clams and snails etc.
