ideas for extra nano filtration?

I have a jbj nano cube DX 12g and there are 3 rear chamber that have bio balls, sponges, activated carbon, and ceramic rings. I am going to take out the bioballs and the rings and probably leave the AC in. Does anyone have any ideas on extra filtration or anything that will benefit my tank to put in one of the back chambers?

Other than macro algae or a skimmer (which you maybe don't need) you probably have it all covered, IMO.

I would suggest that you make sure you're cleaning the sponges regularly or else they can become nasty repositories of bad biology.

Swap out the carbon for Chemi-Pure. It last a lot longer than carbon, balances Ph and doesn't take as much of the good nutrients out of the water.

Purigen is another thing that 99% of the people with nano's use. Worth it's weight in gold, IMO.

Similar to carbon, it's white, comes in it's own mesh bag. Excellent for lowering nitrates and improving water clarity.
You can find it online at Dr.Foster and Smiths website.

They have some "underwater" fuge lights up at Window to the Sea in Tustin that work GREAT. I originally used one in my nano only, but I got such good growth out of it that I bought a 2nd for my 100g. Since light intensity falls off exponentially with distance, you can get some great results from a 10w bulb b/c the macro (Cheato in my case) is actualyl touching the light. And you don't need a reflector or anything b/c you just push the light into the center of a ball of macro and it gets it from all sides.

Oh, and they are only $15 and you can get replacement bulbs at Home Depot for $6

After cleaning, for a fine filtration, you can place a piece of the 50-100 micron filter pad (under filter floss, which will catch the crude particles), just for several hours. And it's washable.
Wasn't impressed by Purigen, may be it works for a tanks with low bioload. Mine are heavily fed.

And, just out of curiosity, to the cubes were attached (not together, or-or):
- canister filter,
- HOB power filter,
- refugium behind, and behing this refugium the protein skimmer (pretty flat construction).
