Ideas for group buys...

Since there seems to be continuing interest, I thought I'd throw this out there and see if / what everyone is possibly seeing group buys for... and perhaps we can all plan ahead, and make a schedual... or something. I'd lead one...


My two ideas to start off were perhaps a frag or grunge buy from Garf.org and... something centering around food, like frozen bulk or live food during the cooler months...

It is the only food most hobbyists in the chicago forum with feed their fish, corals, inverts.

Every post about Rod's Food is amazing.

The food is made by the owner of Rod's Reef in Illinois, people will drive 100+ miles to get his food, it's that good.

According to everyone in the chicago forum, there isnt a fish a live that won't eat Rod's Food.

Premium Aquatics just picked up this food. But they charge $29.95 a package plus $10.00 dry ice fee.

If you go directly to Rod's Reef in Illinois, he sells it for $19.95.

I have been using Rod's Food for the past year and it is the ONLY food I feed to my tank. I highly recommend it to everyone.

This stuff is awesome, I've seen Rod make this stuff up and he literally has to drop everything and spend hours making it. Nothing but HIGH quality ingredients. Like stated before, fish go nuts for it and corals suck it up like their in an all you can eat buffet! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I started using Rod's food for my pair of Rod's Onyx clowns, but now it's the preferred food for all the fish and corals in the reef tank AND the fish-only tank! You just break off a small chunk, soak it for a few minutes, then feed. Use a baster or Kent feeder to target feed corals and anemones.

Warning: Keep your fingers out of the aquarium when you feed Rod's food!

If you ever want to see what otherwise peaceful fish acting like starved Piranha's, or how they look like when they completely lose their mind while feeding, drop in some of Rod's food - make sure you keep your fingers out of the tank while you do.

Rod's Food and DT's Phytoplankton are the only foods that go into my tank. And the only reason I use Phyto is for the clams. Rod's food never makes it to the overflow boxes all my fish seem to eat it before that happens. Great product and I am one the ones that travel over 50 miles to purchase the stuff..

I've heard good things about rod's food too. Next time I'm around Dekalb I'll have to pick up a bunch of it.

I would also be up for trying garf grunge or live mysis.
 
I would be interested in carbon and/or kalk. In bulk that is.

And salt too....


Speaking of salt... I am a truck driver.

Next time I swing past premium aquatics....

Anyone need the heavy stuff?

Its hard to say when. And usually on short notice..

But if anyone wants something between now, and say... two months from now...

I could see us developing a supply web.. Our drivers get past/thru Reinlander once and a while, I have them stop and pickup salt... but very short notice.

I'm all for trying some of "Rod Reef" products... I've wanted to do some Garf Grunge in my sump... I like the idea of all the good stuff growing in it.

I also did the leg work on Kalk a few months back... I have a masonry industry supply where we could get lime by the bag... not masonry lime, just the lime supplier for like 50#- that would need to be split... but it's considered dangerous, and caustic, so repackaging is a problem... we can talk about it, I thought it was really low cost.

Maybe fuge critters, pods if someplace like Inland Aquatics would give a discount? Also, need a fish group buy soon :)

I can't think of anyone not needing salt, because, ummmm, we all do water changes, right? I don't have many needs in the way of food yet, but could be good. I just missed the dry goods order RCS put together :( I should be ready to get serious with moving the tank along and stocking soon, so frags would be good!!!

Too bad there's no delivery on Sunday's when the meets usually happen. Would be nice and convenient to coordinate arounf the meet otherwise.

Can't you just pick that bulb or something similar up at Home Depot or Menards. I have been running my fuge for two years with PC spots purchased for around $8 at both local shops.

They sell the PC spot lights? cool, ive seen the regular spots but not the cooler running PC ones.

Which one do you buy, do you have any info on the name brand, watt, and Kelvin?
 
Unfortuneately, i don't have a name brand as I tossed the container. They are a spiral pc bulb in a spotlight housing. They come in a variety of wattages (is that a word?) in the lighting sections of both stores. Mine are both running 24/7 and are too hot to unscrew right now (still not very hot as they are pc). Just check out the stores - you can't miss them next to the regular spot lights.
I have never checked into their Kelvin temps as I am just using them over my refugium - the redder the light the better as we want all that nasty old algae to grow in the refugium.
The Kelvin temp can't be all that bad anyway as I have heard of people using these bulbs tolight frag tanks - for softies I believe. Just check the stores out or keep bugging me on RC to shut my fuge lights out and unscrew one.
They really have worked out great for my fuge.

If you want grunge I have plenty in my 150 lol.

Seriously Ive ordered garf grunge before and it looked like a bag of detritus with rubble in it. I used it in both my tanks but dunno if it helped anything. I thought it might give them a boost as they're pretty old.
I do think it would help a new tank as far as different types of coraline but possibly taking a hammer to some live rock might do the same thing.

I would get in on a buy with snails & hermits, and some peppermint shrimp. I have never ordered from Reeftopia but am always drawn to the site and their low prices on cleaners! I would be willing to put together a group buy from there. I also think it would be nice if the buys went back and forth between the GB and appleton too. :D

As far as the salt...PetSmart matches their own web prices in-store ($31.99 for the IO bucket), isn't that just as cheap as F&S? Or maybe you use a different kind, guess that would make sense.
 
Good one, my clean crew doesn't seem to live as long as my other pets and need replacing more frequently, And my new tank is bare, so Id be in for some of each!

Jon, Jason and myself have ordered from them multiple times and I will order anytime from them. In fact I will get in right now I have at least $45 worth of stuff I want from there.
 
I can join in on this order also. I have a little bubble algae starting upand I could use a couple of mithrax crabs to nip it in the bud. I can also act as the collection point again (or not) if that works.

I've ordered from Reeftopia a few times, largely because they are one of the few that actually carry true Nassarius. If an order is placed, I'd like more of those at least. Depending on when it happens maybe some cerith, but the few I have right now have little to eat as it is, so don't want to add more of those quite yet.
