ideas for meetings

I remember seeing a thread about educational / activity based things to go on at our meets. I think this is fantastic. Although I do see the value of strict educational pieces say about lanthanum chloride or dosing vodka etc.. I really think that an activity based thing would be the bomb.
One of my favorite meets long ago was when we made fish food and everyone threw in and left with a bag of homemade fish food. Another dealt with real time fragging of fungia and similiar species.

I have a few ideas that I'd love to see and would be all over and would be willing to pay toward an entry fee to cover associated costs when applicable.

- working with acrylic. We have some sump making MASTERS in our ranks. I looked at one the other day and the sticker read 260 bucks!!!! WHAT!!! Being a DIY kind of guy I would love to know how to work with this material and learn from someone who knows. Have an all day build you own sump day hahaha.. (this would be one which has the applicable costs associated with it)

- Additions regement... for ex... although I have been in the obsession for almost ten years I still am a b-ionic guy coupled with big water changes. Kalk is old school yet I have never done it. Vodka is something new and while I get the science of it I don't get the practical dosing measures of it.

- Ca rxn 101 - see previous post. If I haven't dosed kalk then I def don't use a Ca reactor. Don't know the first thing about it.

I guess there are a few ideas that came to my mind. Just some Ideas. I LOVE the thought of being able to leave the meet with something cool done in a teach a man to fish philosphy. I know we have a ton of new people around that would be game for even the basics! JMHO. :)

That would be great. I had very little interest trying to get a mini crawl together. This might be harder. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

Well... I'd be interested in both (meetings and reef-crawl).
I'm still a beginner, but all the subjects you mentioned sound good to me - and as for a reef-crawl, I'd be happy to drive, but unless people want to come gaze at an empty tank, my place is out :)

I think you're suggestiuons are great, Ben, but with the failure of URSNY I've personally become discouraged with helping folks beyond the scope of this online forum.

So, back in '07 an attempt was made to formalize the Upstate Reef Club. I don't see any explanation of why that failed, or whether it's possible to resurrect it. Reading the thread supplied by becon776 made it sound like there was a lot of interest. What happened, guys?

*failure of participation
*lack of genuine interest
*fear of dues

URSNY could have been great.
We could have had an equipment library and book library to borrow from.
As a group, we could have afforded things that we (as individuals) could not have.

That being said, the majority of those posting to this forum nowadays are relatively new to the hobby and maybe they can take up the cause someday :)

i've been involved with several semi -formal and informal wny meetings. i've had a great time when i've attended. the buffalo reef crawls and swaps all well done. the fingerlake group here in rochester held some great meetings as well. it's nice to see the lfs like the arc and abc pets support these events. i can see where a formal group can be labor and cost prohibitive. the biggest problem i've seen ,is having a suitable location to host events. IMO if someone takes time to plan an event, w ny's will show up and have a good time.

Just want to offer my help if anyone wants it to get a meeting underway. I'm completely clueless thus far, but if you tell me what to do, I'd be happy to lend a hand!
