Identify fish (clown fish???)

Hi guys,

I need help identifying the species of my fish. I was told she was a black and white clown fish but I am starting to notice some differences from regular clownfish. My fish is all black, and has only 2 white stripes (as opposed to 3), has a small white dot on his tail and a light mouth.

She doesnt host any of my corals or small anemone. Please help me identify this fish or confirm that it is a clown fish. If so, could I pair it with an orange clown fish?

Thank you

It might be a hybrid of some sort. My black clarkii has only two white stripes but has light color tail. A saddleback would have dark tail like yours. Many LFS would document where they acquire these captive bred clowns from and based on the info you might be able to find out more.

I suppose a black polymnus could be paired with another color polymnus but It's often difficult introduce the same species or even another species at different times without a battle. Difficult yes, but not impossible.
I do not believe that a polymnus would pair and spawn with another clown fish outside of the polymnus species regardless of color.
Your best odds of having two clowns getting along in the same tank regardless of species matching would be to introduce them at the same time.
I wouldn't suggest trying to house different species in a tank less than 6 feet long. Again, not impossible but unlikely to end well for one of them in a small tank.
Hope this makes sense.

I agree with the above in terms of the pairing. Really any two clownfish would work, regardless of the species.

Adding one later than the other poses a threat, but putting one in a breeding net will allow the two to get use to each other.
