They generally go by manufacture date and serial number to determine whether or not your warranty is valid. I don't believe that place of purchase has anything to do with it as long as it was purchased new (and from what I understand even that doesn't always matter).

In the case where pumps are purchased from discount online sites (i.e. eBay) the one year warranty would be determined by the serial number and mfg. date on the product.
