If you could choose between Tunze and Ecotech

I know allot of you have the Tunze
but a set of these with the controller is about the same price as
a set of the Ecotech Marine

Ecotech Marine VorTech Propeller Pumps with Wave Driver (2xMP40W Units) + Battery Backup (1xUnit)
$989.97

Tunze Turbelle Stream Kit TS24 - Two Stream 6101 + 7095 MultiController
$978.83

So, if you were to pick........

:eek1:

Depends on several factors, but mainly your personal preference:
Vortechs will be noisier, simply due to the fact that the pump is on the outside of the tank and the sound doesn't get dampened by the water. Pros are less clutter in the tank, as well as the battery backup.
Tunze's are bulky, but quiet.
If you have a silent system like Jeff's, keeping the pumps as quiet as possible may be worth the bulk in the tank. I like the vortechs mainly due to their compact size in the tank, but you will still see the pump hanging on the outside.
Like I said, it depends on which you prefer, footprint or noise. The vortechs are relatively quiet, particularly when not in pulse(wave) mode, but will be noticable on a quiet system.

LOL! Most do. His is the quietest I've ever come across.

How close do you sit to either end of the tank when in that room?
and
How do you feel about large pumps in the tank vs. the pump end and cord sitting on the outside of the tank?
and
How valuable is the battery backup?(I know Tunze is working on on as well, just not sure when it will be released)
Answer those questions and I think you'll have your answer.

My recliner is at one end of the tank, just feet away.
The other end does not matter, well yes it does...
Guess I need to measure the clearance and see if it will fit where I want it.
Just how much noise do they make?

Ecotech

Ecotech

Flow: 500-3000 gallons per hour
Power Consumption: 9-28 watts
Maximum Motor Temperature: 50-60 degrees Celsius
Aquarium Wall Thickness Range: 3/16”-3/4”
Appropriate Tank Size Range: 20-500+ gallons
Dimensions: Wet Side- 3” diameter by 2.25” long, Dry Side- 3” diameter by 2.25” long
Clearance Needed Behind Aquarium: 3”

Depends on which mode you have it in. Lagoon mode and constant(set to about 75% and below) will be nearly silent. Wave crest will be a little bit noisier. You will notice the ramping up and down of the motor on pulse mode(which is used if you want to create a standing wave in the tank).
If the tank was relatively quiet, the pulse mode would definitely be noticeable and could be annoying if you were sitting in a chair next to the tank and trying to watch TV or read. Lagoon mode and Wave crest are similar random modes, with the difference being that Wave Crest mode will ramp up and down the pump faster(thus more noticeably, similar to, though quieter than, pulse mode). The ramping in Lagoon mode is slower, meaning it is a slower, steady ramp up and down, as opposed to sudden, and thus will also be less noticeable.
If the pump is set to 75% of full power and lower, I would call any of the modes quiet. It is if you are trying to get the max out of the pump that you begin to hear it.
Too bad you're so far away, as I have 3 running at the moment that you could check for yourself. Wanna take a road trip to Roseville? We've got some great fish stores!

Guy, I bought one of my Tunze used and saved a bundle, you might want to check the RC used equipment sale area.

My problem with the Tunze is the space it takes up
I only have a 95 gallon tank

jtarmitage:
you sound happy with them, and this thread I just read
Ecotech sounds good. I have also read Melevsreef.com - Product Review

I am currently running 2 Maxijet 1200 mods, but they get to rattling from time to time and there goes my arm in the tank again.

If I drop a grand on these pumps I better be sure or the wife will:uzi:

I understand completely. I love mine, but I bought them for the 250 which is yet to be set up. I've got them on the frag system in the garage, and in order to hear them, I have to shut everything else off. I intend to use mine to create a standing wave, which on a 250g tank will need to be running at 100%, so they will be at their noisiest, which has me questioning the same thing you are, Tunze or Vortech. If I was to use them just to create random flow, I'd put them in lagoon mode and not think twice about these over the Tunze's.
I bought mine off of RC used, as well as a set of Tunze 6100's. I sold the 6100's and kept these if that helps any.

Well, I've got 3. I could pull one from service for a little bit so you guys could check it out. Seriously. As long as I get it back in good shape.
I'll be coming through on Thursday. You could throw it up on Northbays tank, and everyone could check it out on the tank tour. Then I could pick it up in a couple of weeks when I'm back in town.

:blown:

Need I say more!

OK, I'll bring one over on Thursday. What time do you normally get home?
PM me your phone # so I've got it on hand.

Tunze released the "battery back up" last year at MACNA. I just got two online for around $50. It's not a battery but rather a place for you to plug the batteries into. You'll need to buy a trickle charger and batteries to make use of it. Good thing is you can size your won batteries so you can use large deep cell and never worry about them turing off. I don't think they go into 1/2 power mode either :)

Alternative power supply units for Turbelle® 6101, 6201 and 6301 - safety connector.
Turbelle® stream 6101, 6201 and 6301 are pumps with an electronic motor. They can be operated on any direct-current source (battery, solar cells) from 10 V to 24 V. For a safe connection to the pump, we recommend the Turbelle® Safety Connector 6105.50, which contains a 4 amps fuse. The safety connector permits normal operation with the TUNZE® power supply unit, but in case of a power failure it will automatically switch over to a car battery or a direct-current source.

Jeremy, you got PM

Gress, I plugged mine into my little puter BBU and it works flawlessly

Sure will. That's the great thing about them being DC, they can handle normal modified sign wave UPS (BBU). :)
