IM 50 Fusion Lagoon OR Red Sea Reefer 250

I have a Lagoon 50 but it's not wet yet so I guess I'm no help . I have replaced the stock return pump with a Current USA eFlux 1050 gal per hr DC model which fits nicely in the filter section. That's only a $162.00 upgrade and could be used in a Red Sea as well. The dims of this tank are really great, display area is 30x20x16. I'm looking forward to designing my scape this weekend. Build quality is great, the thing is a beast and looks great on the APS Stand. The stand will require some modification if you want to mount equipment don there, it's very roomy but there are no shelves or any kind of system to add them, you have to wing it. Hope this was at least somewhat helpful.

It was helpful, thanks! What lighting are you planning to use over it? Interested to see how the coverage would work on a longer and deeper, but shallow tank.

Not against sumps, just love simple tanks. Not to say that a sump is too difficult, but I was concerned with the 11 gallon sump of the red sea and any space issues I may have, as well as only a 2 gallon auto top off container. I did hear malfunctions of their float valve occur and occasionally flooding could happen. Just something that wouldnt happen in an AIO tank.

What is so difficult about sumps people? Lol

the top off on the red sea will not overflow the sump. I've been using the float valve on my Red Sea 170 for a year and haven't had any problems.

If your ATO gets stuck on with an AIO, it'll overflow quicker since there's less volume back there.

Seems like you've already made up your mind. To summarize what I've read
You like the simplicity of a AIO (no sump)
for the red sea you still have to buy a pump and skimmer
for the red sea you think the float valve will malfuction
for the red sea you think the top off reservoir will overflow the sump

Well that was the purpose of this thread. I am leaning towards the IM 50. Can't thank everyone enough for their feedback.

Anyone have any thoughts on me doubling up my light? I have a kessil a-150 now that works well with my jbj 28. If I simply add another 150 to the IM 50 would that be sufficient? Or will I struggle with too many dark/shadow spots?

You will need two Kessil 150 aim them in a X pattern not straight down, this was the original way that Kessil were run I am running a 4 bulb T-5 over my IM Lagoon 25 rearless chamber.

Cadlights makes a sexy 36 x 24 x 12 tank with a overflow box.

Thanks for the tip....I actually never heard about the x pattern. Wondering how they may affect the lighting in the room though? People looking at the tank will see much of the brightness from the LED?

I can also report that the stock ATO on the Red Sea works well. People complain about the volume as it only holds about three days worth of water. That is by design. I always cringe when I hear people say they have their RO plumbed right to the sump or that they have a reservoir of enormous volume.

It is a slight X pattern, when the original 150 was out a lot of people where doing that, I will have to look for the club. When it is dark do the first light and then the next playing around to see what works, nothing drastic not trying to blind people walking into the room. I have seen some people tilt there light 5% back so the corals will grow forward and up. Little tricks that might help. I have owned a 150 Kessil Sky blue, I presently own a Kessil 160 over a 12" tank so no X pattern. I also own a AI Prime HD over a QT.

I have decided on the IM 50, but did not purchase the tank yet. Looks like that purchase will be in the spring and I will be setting the tank up in the summer when my job settles down. Don't want to rush through set up. I may go with two kessil a160's instead of the two 150's. I like the idea of having more control like most other people now have.

That's a nice looking tank. Two 160s would be the way to go. I have a 360 with the spectral controller and love it. It affords me plenty of control over spectrum and intensity without all the extra bells and whistles that make most LEDs overwhelming.
