hi I'm new to salt water and i was thinking about setting up a 55gallon FOWLR tank... i was thinking of housing a lion, snowflake eel and a humu Picasso trigger... can any one give me advice?

now with the trigger im very cautious with i mean ive heard horror stories and ive been told that humu's can be hand fed and will allow you to pet them... so i just don't know...

well welcome to the forum

i would start by reading the stickies at the top of the forum sections.

Lions and triggers dont mix. sorry.

also im very sure that a trigger would get to big for that tank pretty quickly

also if you were going to do lions they would have to be dwarfs. Fuzzy lions, Fu man chu.

another thing SFE will eventually get to big for a 55gal. they also get agressive when they get bigger. eels in general will find thier way out of a tank no matter how small the hole.

so in a 55 gal i have a similar set up like you want.

I have
2 fuzzy lions
1 marine betta
1 ghost ribbon eel( not for novice in my opinion. i learned my lesson)

it will take some time to master the feeding of a lion and such.

take your time and read as much as u can. it will make you better prepared for the hills ahead

well what if i were to up size the tank and go with the trigger... what would be some good tankmates for a humuhumu or undulate trigger?

If you plan on upsizing, you could go with a planktonic-feeding trigger (genera Xanthichtys, Melicthys, Odonus) and a lion, possibly one of the medium-bodied species (P. radiata, P. mombassae, P. antenatta) or maybe a Russel's (P. russelii).

If you keep an undualated trigger, as mentioned, it's pretty much a species/specimen only fish (this fish is generally beyond mean).

what about a humu humu trigger? i've read that their the most docile of triggers...
would i be able to keep him with any kind of tank mates or is he only for show also? would a trigger bother a sea star or a some thing like that? or even an eel?

what about a humu trigger, i've heard that their the more docile of the species, is there any other fish it might get along with? what about a larger sea star or an urchin?

Each fish has a different personality, but humu's can get savagely aggressive as they mature. Especially in that size system. Most would recommend zero tankmates.

As mentioned, it's fish dependent. I've housed a picasso with a SFE, a Diodon puffer, a red soldierfish, and believe it or not, a P. volitans (this was 20 years ago before anyone knew better, and I'd never tempt fate now). The trigger was the last fish in the tank, but after a few years, it was killed when it was accidentally envenomated by the lion during a food frenzy. The trigger definitely thought is was the "tank boss".
