Im Back

All Rock put Into a Marine environment, Whether It Is or was or was not live ever will In a short period of time be colonized by Bacteria thus making It Live rock. Period, End of story, The only limitation Is In a closed system the diversity may not be as great as In the Ocean. Simply put In plain English that all can understand, But I'm betting on someone saying different.

Going back and reading what he says makes sense, but is technically not the end all, be all.

The issue is that almost all base rock you come to today is going to be dried out live rock. It all depends on what terms you assign to what.

Personally, I do not consider lace rock to be a base rock. However, IT WILL COLONIZE BACTERIA. Period. This would technically make it live rock, although that doesn't make it good for reefing due to the potential things that can leech out of it.

Bill said it very plainly. Live rock, defined as rock with colonized bacteria, can be ANY rock submersed in saltwater and given "food" WILL BECOME LIVE ROCK. Period. No way to argue it. It happens.

However, the most beneficial rock to aquarists will be rock that is very porous, thus marco rocks, homemade rocks with rock salt or what not to make the porous, etc.

Long story short, I agree with you in that the best rock to use is rock that is very porous (which I think is what you're saying). But you must realize you defeat your own argument by including homemade rock. That would be rock that has not been live before, but you say it works after saying only rock that has been live before can be live again. ;) Think about it.

Bill is exactly right. I started out with about 30 pounds of live rock from a trusted source. All other rock I have bleached and killed because once my tank is established, I don't care to introduce nasty hitchhikers. It's all covered in coralline and I'd bet nobody could tell which was the original "live" vs. what I nuked. It all changes to the same colors and populates with bacteria given enough time. Glue some corals to the rock and let your reef grow.

you know your a reef addict when you get into an argument over the merits of live rock vs base rock vs crack rock... wait.. not the last part.

welcome back old bro. good to see an old face around. let me know if you need any starter colonies. I gots plenty of things to clip back from time to time.

Like I was saying brandon, I didn't explain myself enough in the first sentence cause I was on a iphone instead of a computer. It's an argument I'm not gonna go further cause everyone have their own opinion on it. I stated mine, you can state yours. It's not an argument, it's about discussion! If someone puts it as a argument, so be it and that's where we leave it as it is.

Thanks i will let ya know when im ready for that part. This is the exact reason this club rock's, everyone is so nice and helpful.

I sure didn't mean to start a "Discussion" on base rock vs Live rock. If my little question started all this, wonder what would happen if i started asking about the best method's of dosing? :smokin:

I see. I was discussing the matter. ;)

I think long story short, porous rock makes for the best live rock.

wow awesome light! to weigh in on the live rock debate. I have homemade rock, live rock, "base rock", and lacerock in my system. I also utilize a filtering rock by seachem called "Matrix rocks" its a very porus pebble that has been a great help in setting up other tanks. Its also a great way to get a little biodiversity. just grab a mesh bag and place a handful of matrix rocks into it and find a few peps who will let you "sump cure" the rocks. This helps the biodiversity and with the diversity of types of systems in the club right now (ultra low nutrient, skimmerless, Bare Bottom, DSB's, pico, nano, large, and of course "the wayne" still dry i assume.) you could get a great variety of bactera types. I think this has been a huge factor in my early success.

Hmmmmm I think they are only two kinds myself, Live and Dead. I'll go for the second one myself. lol !!!! Oh laugh people its good for you.

I think there are many types of rocks. My kids science teacher made them find 5 different examples. Of course I never sent them with "live rock" as that is a state of the organisms on and in a rock. and base rock is what I put other rock on and use as a base. But I have a lot of Fiji that is the location that it came from. Then there was dead coral and volcanic rock that both have a different name. I guess I will quit with that so I don't have to look up all the different scientific names. Unless Chriss is still lurking around and can tell us how to measure the surface area of rock and sand. :)

If you don't understand you just had to be there

Looks like a nice set up by the way, Looking forward to meeting you and Welcome Back. Sorry you got Hijacked by the rock debate of 2009....
Bill
Like Wayne and others said, All different kinds of rock the common thread Is they will all become live in a marine environment.

Thanks, i'm glad to be back. I'm sure that this is not the 1st "Discussion" that i'm going to get started. Just wait until i have the tank running and im asking questions on all the "sticky" subjects.
