I'm giving up on photography

You either have to hold your hands steadier, or buy a decant tripod to do it for you.

Tripod was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

Wow, TheFallofSidney, that is one magnificent shot. A tripod has helped me and going to manual focus also helped a lot.

I'm going to try and find a camera shop around here to look for a tripod, the only thing we have here is wal-mart and I know the kind of stuff they sell.

The above picture was actually taken with the camera on the countertop and with a timer so I should have gotten a decent shot.

Have a credit card? Shop at B&H.com - fair prices, fast professional service, and they offer as good of equipment as your willing to pay for. Many, many, many serious photographers (and DJ's or other technical professions) shop B&H.

I was shooting in JPG format, I need to find my copy of PS so I can import RAW images. I tried another shot, this was with only actinic lighting, handheld.

That looks pretty good. Maybe a touch out of focus.

It looks as if it could also stand some clean up in post processing, but I can't help you there. I'm still learning that myself.

Keep shooting though!

well that is your problem you have a canon...

lol I've taken thousands of shots of my tank, and well, only like 20 or so. The thing with fish tanks is the lights, we use some wierd colors 20,000k 10,000 k and most cameras are autoset to handle that. And it screws with your camera and your auto settings.

Hi Tim,

As mentioned a tripod , ballhead and cable release will help both your aquarium as well as general photography. If you want to do it right , read Thom Hogan's article:
http://www.bythom.com/support.htm
You pics look ok - may need to adjust the white balance a little and shut down the aperture for more depth of field (higher number like f/16 gets more stuff sharper but will keep the shutter open longer - so you'll need that tripod).
Good luck.

Hey vader 88. you got a great kit for staters. I only have 2 lenses :( I use a pentax but without formal classes I' fared fine. I would say the best way to learn is getting used to the basic functions and just get out there and have fun. If you arent having fun. then why do photography right? lol. I've had my camera since november and feel like that even without formal training that Im doing alright. perhaps for some inspiration here are some photos that I took from the beginning.

I know I'm coming late to the party but I second the book "Understanding Exposure".

I literally sat in the chair with that book and my camera in my lap one day and did nothing but play with the F-stops and ISO speeds, taking the same pictures over and over again.

The tank will always be a challenge but that's why they make BIG memory cards! :D

Don't give up! Your shots are already looking better!

I'm off to pick this book up, I may pick up the companion book also, Understanding Shutter Speeds ... I'll have pictures up on National Geographic in no time

dude, your pictures look good for a beginner..... I'm a beginner, and all I did was keep shooting and shooting, and I'm still shooting. if you still wanna give up, hit me up, cuss I wanna try out canon ( I have nikon):D

things are coming together, I picked up a Dummies book and Understanding Exposure. Haven't got to read UE yet, but will soon. I never knew how to read the exposure bar and how it tells you whether you will be exposed or not depending on your F-Stop setting and shutter speed. hmmm

I'm working on this, this shot was taken on my Qtank.. so not a lot of

Exposure Time = 1/500"
F Number = F2.8
Exposure Program = Manual
ISO Speed Ratings = 1600
Metering Mode = Pattern
Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 100mm

Looks ok. It would be better if your ISO was much lower, which would slow down your shutter speed which in turn will make fish pics difficult cause they never stay still.

Keep going!

Compromises, there's only one bulb in the tank so not alot of light.

I'm not so depressed now
