Hey Mike, Are you going to leave the eggcrate in there when you add sand/ rock. I think the detritus might tend to collect in the litle squares..
 
I'm going with about a 4" sandbed. My DIY rock has "legs" that I didn't want sitting directly on the glass, so I put the eggcrate in. Anything that makes it through the sandbed can stay where it lands.
Otherwise how is your system doing these days??? My 3 Dart pumps came in last night. I'm going to start building my sump next, so I can water test.
 
I need to come by and see the progress!!... Mine is chugging along. Ive blown my quota out for this year but 2007 sould bring a new single sump set up, calc reactor and frag system(maybe) I have some really nice frags available for you once you get going. I dont want to list here because I might start a frenzy :)
 
I was going to buy but I think I need to come see yours and debate whether to DIY... sure would be cheaper.

Are you going to cut the pieces yourself? I'm also thinking about building one for my 75G (little smaller than yours - LOL). I "Fixed" an old one today for my 29G, had to modify it to my needs. I did the cuts with the acrylic saber saw blade - not to bad. Not sure if I'd use them to fit the sides together but for the inserts it worked good. If you're going to cut them yourself what kind of saw and blades are you using?
 
ReefArtist...I have a very high quality table saw. I'm going to buy a 200 tooth finish blade to cut with. I've been studying lots of the acrylic working threads here and on melevsreef.com and I'm a pretty good DIY guy, so I'm going to buy the acrylic, either 3/8" or 1/2" and go for it. Something like 47x29x29. Let me know if you want to get involved in the sump build. It's going to be similar to melevs model H.

Mike gotta let me know how it goes. I'm still debating on trying to build one, or just purchasing one. I'd love to try it, but when I look at melevs work, it seems a bit overwhelming lol.
 
I'm as good as there bro! Just let me know time/place! I hear ya on the saving $$$. My fear was blowing through +$200 worth of acrylic before getting it right lol
