Hi everyone!
Looked up local reef clubs and SLASH is king around here apparently so I joined reefcentral to introduce myself and whatnot.
I'm fairly new to the hobby and I have a humble little 10 gallon reef that drives me nuts in a great way.
I'm thinking about doing the membership as well but is it worth it as someone with a tank on the smaller side? Should I wait for the big upgrade before joining in?

Hello, and welcome to the forum! I'm not gonna make a good salesman, so I'm just gonna cut to the chase. If you're interested in saltwater, sign up. You're looking at it all wrong if you think a small tank doesn't count. In fact small tanks are a big deal. They're called nano tanks at that size. A little smaller, and they are called pico tanks. Everything about them is unique, from the chemistry to the landscaping.

I personally have a 210g reef and a 3g pico, both awesome for their own reasons. I started with 15g, and I would definitely say join now and learn all you can, as fast as you can.

pico and nono are both fun, but I find them difficult to stock....or to easy to over stock. :D

cheers!
join, its fun. I like to go to the frag swaps and talk to other hobbyists. Come to the next one and I bet you join the club :D

Natural evelaution of this hobby is that you must, at some point, own several tanks. Just be prepaired.... and welcome

Welcome. You can always give one of our "pizza nights" a try. The next one is February 2nd. You will see it at the top of the posts. We just meet at one of the local fish stores, then head out for a bit to eat and maybe a drink. Then if someone in the area is kind enough they invite us over to their house to check out what they got going on and maybe a drink and good conversation. Family members are welcome to tag along for the fun. It is informal and just to get together. It is the best way to get your questions answered. Feel free to swing in and check one out. Hope to see you there.

[welcome]

I'm stuck with 400 and 500 gallon tanks:) Its not all the glory of playing with the smaller, easier to replace sizes like 10's, 20 30 40 50 58 65 75 90 120, etc etc. the club is just a few to a bunch of guys, a few gals, hanging out to talk reefs and do fun stuff related to reefs. It doesn't cost a penny to come hang out, membership dues are optional, but like others have said, there is certainly great value, especially if you win the members only prizes at our frag swaps. It's most fun seeing other members Reef tanks:)

Oh then I would absolutely love to come to one of these pizza nights. I currently have the ten with some easier sps (birdsnest and green monti) an elegance coral (God help me), some zoas and palys, and a toadstool leather.
I do agree that the temptation to overstock is very high though. I'll be moving to a 20 long to combat the wrong turn I took there.
But do you all have a location set for the pizza night? I'm on the Illinois side about 15 minutes from STL but I make the trip out to marine solutions and corals and more often.

You drive all the way out here to St. Charles to go to those stores? That's crazy!

Don't get me wrong, I love our St. Charles stores. In fact, I feel fortunate to have C&M less than a mile away from my office and MS just a 10 minute drive down 364. But, I wouldn't drive all the way from the IL side to get to them.

Oh not on the regular haha. I have a buddy that lives in St. Charles and we go to those two every time I'm there. Over on this side of the river I go to aquatic treasures and kingdom aquatics. Love chatting with Nick.

Our next pizza night is on Thusday,February 2nd at The Corner Reef. It's in Columbia Il. We're meeting there at 7pm then going down the street for dinner and drinks. Hope to see you there.

I'm new. So very new.

Welcome to the group. IHere is a bit of a heads up. This hobby is more addicting than anything else I have experienced. I am still very new to this hobby also. I only had a BC29 when I joined this crazy group in September and it is easily the best thing I have done related to the reefing hobby. Since then I have lost the battle of addiction and bought a used 210gal reef ready tank. I was/am way over my head but luckily there are people in this group that have opened their doors to me and my 2 young children so that I can see their setups and get ideas for my 210g. This group is full of knowledge and enthusiasm. There are a few hilarious people also. I recommend getting used to being broke because this hobby is a money pit.

I have experienced the addictiveness firsthand. I'm planning on picking up a nuvo 25 lagoon as that is the biggest tank my space will allow. But I do plan on going to the pizza party coming up. Very much so looking forward to it!
