im nosey...

I've got a modded ASM G3 and am happy with it. I've done the gate valve mod on the output and the meshwheel mod. I pull a full cup of skimmate (slightly wet) on my 65 (tank)/50 (sump) setup about every 3-4 days. Simple mods to do, I would imagine just as easy on the Mini as well...

I have an ASM G2 with no mods. Uses the sedra 3500 I believe.
Only skimmer I have ever had besides a prism so I dont have much to compare it with.

Mike, I think the mesh mod is for needle wheels or venturi equipped pumps. I didnt pay much attn to the mod when we did Mel's at a recent meeting. The mags are neither.

Ok I thought at much. I am just trying to think of a few ways to improve my POS skimmer.
I have looked at the DAS line and many seem to like them here on RC.

d.a.s. skimmers are grrrrrr8!!! i have a bx2 and it is a monster, but the ex line is much better. i really doubt you need a whole new skimmer though.. if you switch pumps, you will be happy.

as far as doing a meshwheel on a mag.. the answer is yes.. its not hard at all, and i would be willing to bet it would do quite well. if you decide you wanna do it, let me know. my octopus pumps were regular (non needlewheel) water pumps when i started. i did the meshmod, and made a venturi out of pvc. worked like a charm. to be honest, i think it works better when you start with a paddle impeller instead of a nw impeller.

Skwirl,
I thought I had read your post about them.
I would be interested in doing the meshwheel. I was at Joanne's and I bought some plastic needle point "boards". They were only 29 cents each. The good thing is they are circular so I would think all I would have to do is follow the pattern.

What all would I need to do this? I know my urchin is capable of doing better because two days ago I threw in a limewood airstone on a luft pump and I have gotten 2 - 3 times the skimmate. It is wetter though but figure it it still breaking in.

This also brings up a question about wet skimmate:
What percentage is salt water? If it is a large percentage wouldn't this affect the tank salinity over a week - month?

Thanks.

I all depends on how wet the skimmate is. I skim what I would call "semi-wet" and pull out about a liter a day from my 120. I just mix my water change water a little higher in SG and the tank stays around 1.025-26. Some people actually have to top up with dilute seawater but they are pulling gallons a day.

Thanks for the info Chris. It was just one of those things that pop into my head and got curious about it.

hey!! and as far as the mesh goes.. i have some of the p4 mesh everybody is using left. we can use what you bought, or what i already have.

I currently have 3 different skimmers. Older Euroreef CS6-1, an AquaC 180 with a Mag 9.5 on it, and a Lifereef venturi skimmer driven by a Mag 9.5. The Lifereef rocks, the AquaC works alot better now that it is being overdriven, and I'm in the process of putting a bigger pump on the Euroreef. As my hard and soft coral prop tanks share a sump, I have one more skimmer than necessary. I'm definitely keeping the Lifereef, and will see what modded version of the remaining two I ultimately keep.
