i have never seen it. i hear clicking noises and suspect it lives in a hole in a rock. i have had several shrimp die/disappear in the past couple of months. could it be that the pistol shrimp is eating them? what does a pistol shrimp's diet consist of? should i try to trap it? how about a water bottle wedged to the hole with some food in it so it comes out to get some food.? any ideas? thanks.

Mantis shrimp? Sounds like a mantis OR a pistol. Yes trap it and find out. Wear thick gloves when handling a full trap BTW!

open ended bottles with food in the bottom would be a good trap method... you really need to determine what exactly it is. If its a mantis, that is bad news unless he is in there by himself.

Also, and I may be wrong here... Dont most pistol shrimp burrow or are basically sandbed dwellers?? If this thing is hiding in a rock, you may have a thumper mantis.

If you can isolate the rock its living in, that would help considerably as well since you could pull the rock out, dip it in RO and see what falls out.
