I'm so lucky!!!!

It is the little things in life that give me the biggest joy. This week, work had me traveling to Eastern PA. Usually because of my schedule I don't get to enjoy the cites that I travel to. This week is a rare exception. It started Monday in Lancaster, PA. World famous for it's Amish heritage. And the worlds largest aquarium store. "That Fish Place". I spent about three hours walking around this store (about the size of K Mart). They have most every item from their catalog, on the shelf ready to buy. The fish room is about 10,000 sq ft with fresh and marine fish and inverts. They have two 50-60 ft long 3' wide troughs full of coral with light movers on rails. realy cool stuff.

My next stop was about 90 minutes north in East Stoudsburg, PA. Right on 80 on the NJ border. A hidden little gem is Alti's Reef Coral Farm. You can check them out at www.Altisreef.com
Look mid way down the page on the right of a link to the facility. Great pics of the build. I popped in unannounced and was welcomed by an incredibly smart and passionate hobbiest. The owner Rob. He spent about 90 minutes expalining his system and philosophies of reef keeping. Talking about smart, his systems are tiered with a 6-9 inch offset between the 5 vats. This way he only needs enough flow for the first vat. The rest of the flow is gravity fed from the 1st vat. He runs a 1000 gallon plus system on one 2400 GPH pump with tons of flow. Each vat is roughly 4'x4' and they have up to 600 frags per vat. Imagine 20 plus vats with 200-600 pieces of coral per vat. They could easily have 10,000 pieces of coral for sale. The most impressive part was the care that they take. They start with a QT system for new mother colonies. They then go to a growout system. Lastly the mother colony is partially fragged leaving the original colony for future growth. I cannot say enough about the hospitality and professionalism of Rob Alti. If you have the opportunity, it is worth the trip.

I have been to "that pet place'" on my way back from Jersey doing some floor work @ Petsmart .... nice place !!!!! tons of goodies ,,,, love the light system on rails ,, wish i would have known about the other place at that time ,,,every time i go out of town i get on line and load up the GPS unit with local salt water stores , there are some hidden treasures in New York/Jersey area, Chi town has some kick butt places too ,,

Alti's Reef is literally in the middle of nowhere. He bought this house on five acres because of the out building. He sits on the side of a mountain and without GPS i wouldn't have found them. Sure glad that I did. If you are ever across I80 through PA, it is worth the trip.

i drive through there a few times a year ,,,i will go check it out ,,,on the way home from work, so i can grab some goodies ,, i like the raised tanks they did ,, 2400 gal pump running that whole system ,,great idea

I go that way all the time when we head out to see the inlaws, how far off of 80 is it?

It takes about 15 minutes off of I80 to get there. But it is only about 4.5 miles. You have to go through town, and up the mountain. You know your in for a treat when the road is called "Winding Pass Dr." Well worth the trip IMO. And Rob is great.

The owner Rob told me that his highest electric bill for the house and farm has been a little over $500. That is awesome concidering the house has AC, a pool, spa, plus the coral farm with AC. He certainly has mastered the flow with the tiered vats. I burn 2/3's that at home during a hot summer with the pool, pond, AC, etc.

He makes everything himself. Lumenarc type reflectors out of CHEAP white aluminum, that triple the PAR of a Chrome batwing. Homemade frag plugs. wooden vats, etc. he certainly knows how to maximise his $$$, and everything looks 1st Class.

I met Rob 3 or 4 years ago and got quite a few things from him...nice things...he was set up in the basement of a discount clothing store in Hackensack N.J. .....he was great ...He offered give-a-ways for the frag swap and Christmas party and I guess the officers at the time did not contact him....He does a lot of speaking through out New York, N.J. and and Pa. He even said he would come to talk to c-sea.....Great person and stuff.... can't wait to see his new place next time I visit the outlaws in N.J.
