IMAC Vegas Cancelled?

I received the following from one of the IMAC coordinators...

Hi Everybody;
I’m sorry to be the bearer of sad tidings but it appears that IMAC Las Vegas will be cancelled. There have been so few sign ups that it will not be fair to the vendors, the hotel or us. It is very disappointing to us since we thought Las Vegas would be a very popular destination, especially for Western hobbyists.

If you have registered for IMAC Las Vegas you will have 2 options: a refund or you may apply your registration toward IMAC Chicago next year May 29-June 2. Exhibitors will have the same options.

Is this decision final? Possibly not. If 200 of you register in the next week, IMAC Las Vegas is still possible. In checking the forums of the western clubs, we find many of you say you are coming, you just haven’t registered. Don’t worry, registrations are kept in a separate fund and won’t be involved in our negotiations with the hotel, if this IMAC is cancelled.

Western hobbyists, this may be your last chance to show that you can support a major conference. So go over to
http://www.theimac.org/IMAC Las Vegas.htm and sign up to try and save this conference.

We’re sorry if you have already bought plane tickets to Las Vegas. Maybe you can exchange them for something else or, better yet, encourage your friends to sign up for IMAC Las Vegas.

Thanks,
Dennis Gallagher

I hadn't even heard of this conference. I am going to sign up and hope that it can still be a go! Who doesn't love Las Vegas in August??? :)

I wonder if it has something to do with the Reef-A-Palooza the week after. Some are calling it the biggest hobby event in the US, now.

I seem to remember that the last time they had IMAC in Las Vegas was a couple years ago and was done in conjunction with a commercial aquaculture conference (AAS, CAA, and some other orgs I think...). If you are going to attend, I'd recommend finding another hotel, unless they have seriously renovated the Riveria in the last couple years. The closest nice hotel is The Wynn.

Just my 2 cents worth...

I didn't know about it either. If I would have known in advance I could have gone.

Sounds like a marketing problem.

I have to agree!

First I've heard about it too. A Las Vegas smoke-filled casino in August sounds dreadful and the schedule doesn't look even close to the content we had at WMC.

I am registered.

But I have to wonder if any of these organizers have ever been to Las Vegas in August. A February or March conference would make much more sense.

I don't mind the temp. outside so much since I expect that it would be mostly indoor activities - lectures and such. I do have a real problem with the smoke, however. Smoke-filled casinos are a total turn-off for me. We have solid scientific data that tobacco continues to be the number 1 cause of preventable death in this country. It couldn't possibly be good for the reef creatures either!

If it could be a smoke-free Vegas venue, then I'm in!

What Im not understanding is even why? Let alone the fact this is the first time Im hearing about all the venues mentioned in this thread before. But good god men! Vegas in August? If there was to be a "west" venue, how can one look farther than california? Um, most populated state in US? Hello? I think the real debate is if it should be held in N. Cal or So.Cal :D

Ah fond memories of going through Nevada and Utah in August... Cruising down the highway in a delerious state of consciousness basking in the smeltering heat of 114 degrees, wondering if I'll make it through alive....Good times...:smokin:

I dont have the right to complain about it being in a smoke venue, as Im a pretty heavy smoker :/ But, this hobby does have a strong heartbeat of eco consciousness and self awareness, which a Vegas lobby just can't cater too IMO and is kind of hypocritical in a minute scope of the sense. And one I wouldnt feel comfortable with imposing on a group of people knowing the general stereotypes of this hobby, not that Im going to specify  but I can safely say there are not alot of smokers! Id bet as far as members go its at least 20 to every 1 smoker, guess who that one is! :lol2:

Am I the only one to brave LV in August? Who goes out during the day in Vegas anyway? Day time in the conference, night time out partying. Come on people, sign up so we can have a BIG conference on our side of the US!!!!!!

Those of us who want to get away from the smoke. LA, SanDiego, Monterey, Marin Headlands. SO many alternatives to Vegas.

vendors? like livestock? If you're not anywhere close to your tank, why would you buy livestock? Or is this all dry goods?

summer heat in Vegas is why god invented the taxi.

and come one, who are we kidding here, it's not like us Sacramentoans are sitting around basking in the cool summer breeze ourselves. it's freekin' hot here as well!

You can get the livestock right before you leave on Sunday. Last week I went to St. Louis and bought a few corals/fish. I packed them well into a styrofoam box with ice pack and then into the suitcase and check them in. No problems with Southwest and everything arrived alive and well!
